Coastal Command Hastings

Post by Garry Russell »

Not being a military sort my knowledge is limited

An interesting pic on for auction has come up

http://www.airlinehobby.com/listings/de ... /index.cfm

I would assume the mauve is a colour prob with age and enhancement and it was blue perhaps like the Shackletons of the time. :dunno:

An interesting and I can imagine smart livery :tab:

TBH I am not that familiar with Hastings in Coastal Command

Whatever the details it's a new one on me :)

When thinking coastal Command types, Hastings doesn't really jump to the fore :dunno:

The RAF had six Hastings for Coastal Command and all were used for weather reconnaissance. Colour scheme very similar to the Shack. There is an FS9 model for it from D-GHHH simulationware via AVSIM.

Flew in a Hastings from RAF Leconfield as an Air Cadet, we went low flying one Sunday morning in the Yorkshire dales (Sept 1971) and I will always remember the view from the cockpit when it was my turn to go forward, the trees were pretty close!

Quite some machine but it did not have the best of safety records. 30 were cat 5 or written off from a production run of 147.

I think there may have been recurring engine problems

My feeling is based on a phrase used at the time claiming it to be the best three engined aeroplane in Transport Command.
