Interesting breakdown there Nigel. Naturally the Government get the biggest slice but I never knew the Garages got so little.
Eddie, neither did I until I did a little research. This would ultimately explain why garages are more expensive than say Tesco or Asda for these stores do not really have to rely on profit from petrol to stay in business.

This would also probably explain why there is such a difference on the cost of fuel up and down the country between the independent retailers, they probably mark up their prices in accordance with turn-over (I think)

There was a story in the local rag here about a garage which had served petrol pretty much since the invention of the petrol pump and how it was forced to stop selling it due to the lack of profit.

The supermarket down the road could afford to sell it at a much cheaper price, even a loss, as this lured in customers to the main shop and they made the profit up on other stuff.

Bit like Tesco that advertise if you spend £50 or more on food they knock I think about 10p off a litre.

Of course if you do all your shopping there.................plaus they probably bulk buy the fuel.

:dunno:

Exactly, they may loose cash on the fuel but the grocery money you may have spent at the local shop is now in their tills.

I suppose it indirectly has an effect on far more shops than petrol stations.

Quite sad really.

That's why they love great big thumpin V8's in the US. The juice is so cheap, they can afford to run 'em.

A mate of mine at work has a V6 and he is constantly moaning about the costs of fuel. Talk about glutten for punishment! :brick:

I am now paying 94 cents per litre (about 66p) for diesel here in Spain, it did not quite make the 1 Euro at the height of the price curve :-({|=
