FSX Missions folder

Post by DaveB »

Hi Chaps :hello:

Here's a strange one for you...

Something disagreed with my AICarriers a while back.. can't remember exactly what it was now but it was an update of some sort.. yes.. ASN of all things  As a result, I decided to go down the .net route and use that version of AIC leaving Java dead in the water as it were.

Having rebuilt my AICarriers (to some degree).. I thought I'd flash RFN4.1 up as I was tired of searching for a particular carrier for an hour. Landing with 2% fuel remaining was a little too close to call  I'd previously installed RFN's Tacan into a load of aircraft including the default Bell 206 but yesterday, the gauge wasn't displaying for some reason. RTFM again and saw it states that C++ 2010 Runtime x86 has to be installed along with the x64 version on 64-bit OS.. it wasn't so I downloaded and installed it. Still no gauge in the Bell.. just a black rectangle *-) Chopped to the SeaKing and there it was so I changed the Bell's entries to match the SeaKing. Note.. there should have been absolutely no reason for this. I fitted the gauge in the Bell first and it's run faultlessly up to this point. :dunno:

Anywho.. mit functioning gauge, I set off to find the carrier Charles de Gaulle.. well.. that was the intention. As I started tuning the gauge to pull X47 (CDG's Tacan), a series of error boxes came up stating:
cGaugeSoundClass
Facility 0
Error ID 3
Full Error Code 0x3
Location 5
File ./Missions/Military/CarrierPractice/Sound/CarrierPractice_21.wav :-O
The other errors differed in that they called for different wav files. NEVER had this happen before on any install be it Win7 or WinXP *-) So.. I looked in my FSX folder for the Missions folder and there it was.. gone :-O :dunno: Unsure if I'd lost the plot, I ran FSX and tried again with the same result. Checked an old install of FSX and there was a Missions folder so I dragged that into the new install and Robert is your proverbial uncle.. working TACAN with no errors.

Having done all this.. the burning question remains.. where the hell did my Missions folder go to? I don't go around deleting default folders even if I never use them but it wasn't there.. not even empty. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could have done this? I swear also that I had a 'Search' option on the RH side of the 'Start' window (near Help and Support ala WinXP) but I now see Search for programs and files in a window at the bottom LH side of the Start window. This looks natural enough so I may be having a 'Silver moment' as far as this is concerned  I don't often have to search for stuff so this anomaly is probably just me :poke:

Is it possible that uninstalling a model that has included missions has also removed the Missions folder? This seems the only logical explanation I can come up with. While it sounds unlikely, I know that some users of the AH Swift had stuff go missing if it was uninstalled in a particular way (eg.. the way you'd expect to uninstall it!!) and there have been 2 updates to their Grumman F3F which has required the previous version to be uninstalled prior to the update (which was, in effect, a full version). The only other model I've had to uninstall has been the Milviz P-38L as it's 'update' was a full version. Can't imagine Milviz having an uninstaller do something so poop. It's got me beat :dunno:

It's very possible for an uninstaller to screw things up Dave especially if it was badly written without fallback checks as to what it is actually deleting. If you did indeed install an aircraft that also had missions and then used it's uninstaller to remove the aircraft then I'd bet it took out the entire missions folder too and not just the content of the missions folder it originally installed.

I had one once that took out the default 'effects' folder when I ran the uninstaller! :-O  8)

Luckily I had a buddy on TeamSpeak at the time and he sent me his default 'effects' folder from a clean 'back-up build' he kept on an external drive. That got me back to the stock effects but I then had to manually add any missing effects as I discovered add-on aircraft with problems.

Cheers Larry :)

Now you mention effects.. the poor chap who uninstalled the AH Swift had it uninstall his effects folder too 8) Needless to say, a few over at the Outhouse had a bit of a go because he hadn't read the instructions regarding the updates.. you'll have seen the thread.

Wish I used RFN's TACAN a bit more then I could definitely point the proverbial finger but to the very best of my knowledge.. the only 2 things I've uninstalled recently have been the AH F3F and the Milviz P-38. I'm not sure if either has missions but out of the two.. I'm betting on the P-38. I know there's another update due for TacPac users but as I don't have it.. I'm hoping the update won't affect me.

As it happens.. AICarriers has a pretty poor uninstaller too. I made backups of my cfg files and put them in a separate folder inside the AIC main folder then ran the uninstall routine so I could be sure of starting afresh. Damn it's hide if it hadn't deleted the backup folder too :wall:

Ah yes, that's another one that can bite you in the butt!

If I ever do a back-up like that I always make sure I save the back-up outside of the main FSX (or whatever program) folder.

This is what happens when you install boats into a flight simulator.

I'm sure you know this Nev but the RFN Tacan is an aircraft gauge that enables you to find the 'boats'. If it wasn't for aeroplanes.. we wouldn't need it

Anywho.. it certainly wasn't a boat responsible for binning my Missions folder :shhh:

Hi Dave, :hello:

I most certainly remember doing the Tacan equipment during my apprenticeship but that does not mean I understood it at all!

(Here be dragons)

We never had one at all IRL. The closest we got to anything RAF was (I think) an ANARC57.. that rings a bell *-) It was used mainly (pretty much exclusively) for talking to Grimnods. Surprised it ever worked with out little it was used

Hi Folks

Dave -
It might possibly be that you'd accidentally
dragged your missions folder, into another folder,
when using explorer/filemanager.

Done so myself for several other folders.

Anyway....
To find if that's the case,
I've tweaked a .bat file to list the sub folders.

!_DirCheck_FSX_Tree.txt

[Right-Click] the link above,
and [SAVE AS] to the root of your fsx folder, (same folder as fsx.exe).

[Rename] it from .txt to .bat

[Double-click] it to run.
It'll generate a log file named !_DirList_FSX_Folder_Tree.log

View the log in notepad.

Cheers Paul :cpu:

I can't see why I'd have moved the Missions folder or any other folder there but fully admit that where there's human input.. anything can happen  I'll give this a shot and see what pop's up ;)

EDIT: This is what it kicked out mate..
@echo off

ver >> %log_filename_Folder_Tree%

echo. >> %log_filename_Folder_Tree%
echo.Run location - >> %log_filename_Folder_Tree%
echo.%CD%\ >> %log_filename_Folder_Tree%

echo. >> %log_filename_Folder_Tree%
echo.FSX folder lister - Completed. >> %log_filename_Folder_Tree%

echo.FSX folder lister - Completed.

I got the above but can's see any of the logs.. unless the above is it/them? *-)
