Four went out..

Post by DaveB »

Ever since Alphasim released their Heinkel He111H, I've had a soft spot for it and it remains one of my favourite models from that stable ;)

Hi Dave,
There's a mixed flight.
How did you manage to depict the single damaged engine? Deliberate overwork, or what?

Yes.. a problem doing formation shots is that there are rarely enough repaints for a given squadron. There are exceptions of course.. some of JY's AI have been repainted in Squadrons.. but by and large.. you get a single paint hence.. a mixed bag of Heinkel's from 3 different theatres of war. The top 2 shots (2 of 5 but I didn't want to bore you with the rest) were taken a few days ago.. the last shot was taken last week I think. and was setup for that shot. The 111 has smoke from the right engine all the time (two wisps off either exhaust) but the left has none.. I guess because it was modelled with the full black smoke in mind (hitting the 'I' key envokes the effect on that engine only). For that shot.. I simply cut the gas to the left engine and feathered the prop to simulate it being shot to bu99ery. It was a practise run hence no weather 8) :wall:

A side effect of using the model with AirTrafficFX is that the prog will by default put the models nav lights on (you've already seen that some show the landing lights too). This isn't a problem on all models but on the 111.. the vortices effects use lights rather than fx so you get vortices all the time. Outside AirTrafficFX.. if you put the lights on with the aircraft on the ground.. the formation whites display as vortices going up.. very odd :-O Still.. this is an original FS9/FSX release (pre SP's) so it doesn't do bad displaying as well as it does ;)

Did you see there was a modified FDE for the He111 posted over at SimOuthouse a week or so back?
Haven't tried it myself, so I can't comment on it though.

Hi Dave :hello:

No.. I missed that. Will nip over and check it out ;)

The model was always 'pushed' a bit on the release FD. The brakes were pony and you needed a runway the size of Heathrow 27R to get off the deck with any sort of bomb load. It was and remains a pig to see out of.. you have to make a very shallow approach otherwise the runway goes out of view. There must be more but I can't think of them off the top of my head  Despite all this.. I still like the model. I guess you have to like He 111's ;)

I just looked at the cfg re exhaust smoke and these are connected to lights too. Exhaust smoke is present for both engines ;) I've remmed out the 'contrail's' :)

EDIT: Just downloaded and tried the revised airfile and config. They've certainly improved low speed handling, takeoff and landing. I think the eyepoint has been changed too. Open the throttles and she seems to move off a bit quick (a fair bit quicker than before) and it will now unstick with little or no input. Brakes are still pony  All in all.. a keeper me thinks ;)

Very nice, I reinstall mine, it's been a while. I would like to see an A2A Heinkel that would be a treat.
