Duxford last Friday

Post by Paul K »

I went down for a couple of hours on Friday to watch the preparations for this weekend's D-Day 70th Anniversary event. The pictures are a bit blurry, but I thought I'd show them anyway. Click on them to see them full size:

An imposing line up. The two in the middle arrived and landed together, one on the concrete and one on the grass alongside. Very impressive to watch. I believe at least one - possibly two - more were due to arrive for the display:

Mk.I Spitfires, a Hurricane and Buchon down near the HAC hangars. Only the Buchon got airborne while I was there:

The Army Air Corps was there with this Apache. One of the crew was an Australian ( the bloke half way along with the hat ):

The F-15A is getting a new coat of paint in readiness for going inside the AAM when the big refurbishment project starts. The P-51 from the IWM at Lambeth is getting similar treatment and is to be a permanent Duxford resident:

Also from the Lambeth is this well known bit of Halifax. A lot of stuff has been moved out of the main London museum because its being reconfigured to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of WW1. The Lancaster nose is up here too, but I couldn't find it on Friday:

DHC Twin Otter VP-FAZ of the British Antarctic Survey, which has its headquarters in Cambridge. She's been flying around this area over the last few weeks, so presumably she is waiting out the Antarctic winter up here. Not the first BAS aircraft I've seen at Duxford - their Dash 7 was there a few years ago. I wonder if it would be possible to get hold of the flight plans for VP-FAZ's trip up from the Antarctic. There is a very nice repaint for the Aerosoft model, and it would be a heck of a journey to recreate. I might contact the BAS, or even drop into their offices:

Thats the beauty of Duxford - it's such an active airfield that you never know what you're going to see. :)

The C-47 line up was particularly impressive because they were broadly in the same colour scheme - it looked like the big day itself, or D-1 at least. An Air Atlantique one stuck in the middle of them would have spoiled the scene.

And yes, always nice to see a Twotter. Great that they are back in production.

I believe this is the BAS Tw'Otter which is staying in the UK for this summer. It will be carrying out imaging radar trials over parts of the UK for amongst others, myself, in the latter part of June. The radar will be/is fitted in the aperture left when the cargo doors are removed.

If the BAS are surveying the UK, I think we can say goodbye to the 'barbecue summer'.

Sure Dave! :)

She is flying with an X- and S-band (3 and 15cm, respectively) SAR for academic research concerning such things as monitoring landslide movement (Dorset coast, roughly Lyme Regis to Bridport), archaeological prospection (Avebury, Wiltshire and Cranborne Chase, Dorset), habitat mapping for ground-nesting birds (Martin Down NNR, Dorset), woodlands (Savernake Forest, Wiltshire), oil spill monitoring (near The Needles, Isle of Wight), among many others. The first three projects mentioned (landslides/archaeology/bird habitat) are led by myself. As VP-FAZ has been flying mostly in the south this week she popped into Bournemouth (Hurn) this afternoon (hosted by Cobham) and here are some shots from the ground. I've also included a shot of her at 10k ft over Cranborne Chase!
