Looks like I have probably solved the problem of scenery flattening when descending from a great height!!!

Had previously done some tweaks to the FSX cfg (haven't we all at some time) and found that one of the tweaks was giving more problems than help.....FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION= had it set at 0.25 and after trying different values it did not appear to do anything that could be considered worth-while so decided to delete it.

Using another tweak under [Display] Heading: TextureMaxLoadTextureMaxLoad=15 (still need to try other values of 12,15,18 or 21) at 20,000ft I then made a descent and could still see houses and trees when at 4,000ft. Still got more values to try with this one but it does appear to have improved things immensely. Would be interesting to see if any-one else using this tweak finds an improvement graphic wise.
