Latest Java update for WinXP users

Post by DaveB »

Hi Chaps..

Got the prompt from Java yesterday (21st) saying an update was available so I downloaded and installed it (I let Java download and install it). Everything looked fine but the pc remained on all day so it's possible that any 'nitty gritty' changes didn't happen until the restart today.

Turned the pc on this morning and started browsing the forum (as you do) and while watching the new 1-11 soundfile vid linked from the main forum, I got a BSOD. Unusual for this pc.. they're so rare they're non-existant. The pc restarted and an error box threw up stating that MS anti-Malware had had a problem.. they appologised for the inconvenience e t c. No problem. Seconds later, a further BSOD. No error box on restart this time. Went back online.. another BSOD :-O

Did a quick scan with MSE and nothing popped up. Had a look in event viewer and nothing conclusive there. Reports sent to MS but there was 'no information' regarding this fault. There never is is there 8) Then.. a further BSOD while using windows explorer :| The pc got as far as 'Welcome to Windows/ but got no further so I turned the power off and restarted again.. this time in Safe Mode. First thing I did was look for the last update to Java but it wasn't showing in the reduced window you get available in Safe Mode so.. I disabled Java then had the brainwave of doing a system restore. I took it back to Wed and here I still am after 20mins without a BSOD. Java is in the systray prompting me that there's an update and it can stay there

I can't put hand on heart and say 100% that the latest Java update has been the cause but it sure looks like it. Not sure either how this would effect Win Vista or Win7/8 users. For sure.. WinXP SP3 doesn't like it so please use caution when deciding to accept this update.

EDIT: I've just checked what's sitting in the systray and the update causing the problem (I believe) is Java 7 update 15

Hello Mate :hello:

Java's a joy isn't it. Sitting in 'add and remove programs' it shows Java6 update 39 so what the true state of it is is anyones guess 8) My pc was fine all day yesterday after the install. It's only today after the pc was turned back on that I had the succession of BSOD's. I remember Ben saying not long ago that a Java update had introduced some security prob.. I'd already installed that one! TBH.. I wish I didn't have to have it at all but so much stuff relies on it these days :(

Anyway.. still ok here after the windows restore. The only two things I've had to change are an ec135 texture folder and my entry for the AS350 WMPA paint which both occured after the restore point yesterday. There were a couple of other things but I can't remember what they were when restore came back :worried:

Problem now is that I can't get into Java control. I'm sure it knows there's an update (J7 UD15) and because I cancelled it in the systray, I can't open Java control with the update pending. Should I feel wild and whacky.. I guess I could go into Safe Mode and get at it that way. Think I'll leave well alone for now though ;)

Hi chaps,

Not long home from work, but my dad phoned this morning to say if he now clicks on a html link in a document or email, Windows can't find an associated application. The last thing he did was update Java last night. I'll call him later to fix it, but he is on Win 7

XP Pro is undoubtedly a 64-bit version and I'm on 32-bit mate. Perhaps that's all it needs for things to go wrong :dunno: We all know what pc's are like and sometimes.. one flavour of update for ALL doesn't work. The only thing 'installed' recently (yesterday) was the Java update and other than the UKMIL Bucc draining the life out of it.. this pc is as reliable as a reliable thing on the most reliable day of the year  Since system restore to the day before the install.. it's been wall to wall and tree top tall again

I uninstalled Java on my Windows XP SP3 machine when all the security scare news came out. I did this based on recommendations in the Windows Secrets newsletter and Ask Leo newsletter. So far I have not found any website that I visit that needs Java, except Secunia's online scanner and I downloaded their version (PSI) that resides on the computer so that issue is solved. Note there is a difference between Java and Javascript. Two completly different technologies.

Here is a useful article about Java: http://ask-leo.com/should_i_disable_jav ... o_how.html You might also want to scan through the comments at the bottom of the page for some additional information.

Thanks Nige

I have taken Java off before.. some time ago when things started going wrong but put it back again as certain FS progs require it. I can't remember which ones now but it was only because these 'tools' needed it, I reinstalled it. A complete pain in the proverbial if you ask me! 8)
