Nev, this reminds me of a debate we had on the A2A forum around the time of Accu-Feels first release.

You say there is no sound of tyre screech on landing - when you have flown as a passenger on an airliner, have you ever actually heard the tyre screech when the aircraft touched down ? I haven't. I've heard , or rather felt, the rumble of the runways surface, but I've never heard a screech from the tyres.

Similarly, the deployment of the flaps - I flew a load of flights with EasyJet and Ryan Air about 5 years ago, and can't remember the noise of the flaps deployment ever reaching my ears. I could see them extending, certainly...but the noise of the mechanism in the wing never reached into the cabin.

Maybe Tonks or HC can add to this as they are full-time pilots - do they actually hear the flap mechanism as it extends the flaps ? Do they really hear the tyre screech on touch down from the flight deck ? I suspect not.

Depends on type Paul. The airbus A320 series have some very distinctive cabin sounds when some of the flap settings are deployed. As does the 146 / Avro RJ and the Fokker 100 / 70 when the first notch of flap is retracted. I can only ever remember what sounded like 'tyre squeal' on a BritAir operated flight to Strasbourg and that was in a CRJ in very stormy weather where he had to crab it in. While I've heard these sounds while sitting in the cabin, im not sure how audible they'd be up front.

Hi Paul,

You can definitely hear the nosewheel touchdown from the cockpit. As to the flaps I cannot remember but I know a man who does! :help:

Sitting in an F-27/Herald by the main wheel you are very close to, and in full vision of the mains at touchdown, but maybe they made some noise, but, hundreds of flights and I don't remember anything particular about a sound.

Certainly not like FS sounds.

Nev, just installed the CS C-130 and the Turbo Prop Sim sound pack, and there's definitely a flap motor sound - a high pitched whine. Have you got the sounds installed to the correct folder ? In FSX / P3D its SimObjects\Airplanes\CS_C130\sound, and all the other CS C-130 models are aliased to it. I would imagine its the same C-130 folder in FS9.

I think you are right about the tyre squeal though. And the engine sounds aren't as good as I remember them. *-)

I've heard the flaps and gear winding down on airliners as a passenger. I guess it depends where you sit. I always get a window over the wing.
However a flight in a P51 and I couldn't hear anything over the merlin! Couldn't feel anything either, smooth as silk.
I've had a ride in Just Jane in the nose and you can hear lots of hisses and wheezes from the compressed air brakes!

It's 20- 25 years since I spent a long time perched on the jumpseat of various 1-11s.

Electrics, Gyro's, Radio Fans, Air Con, Air flow round the flight deck, flow noise as the nosewheel doors opened, tyre rumble as the nose wheel touches, everything rattling and banging under braking/reverse thrust, but no tyre squeals.

Got the internal sounds right now with the externals not far off. Have to check with the various copyrights whether I can release them though.
