No need to apologise, Peter! We're all venturing into the unknown here and there are bound to be some false trails along the way. At least we're all helping each other and reaping the benefits of others' experiments. I don't mind putting the odd thing in P3D, my main aim is to see if I can do without FSX but probably not

It won't take long to install it back into P3D and it'll be worth it to have Holger's lovely scenery back. Did I tell you that I have also bought FTX Pacific Fjords for which Holger was one of the main contributors? It sits between Tongass and Pacific North West (although I know you're not enamoured with that  ) and Holger has designed it to blend in with Tongass.

Anyway, thanks for the info.

Ian :)

Ian, I suspect that the reason I was not enamoured with Pacific North West was probably because I did not install it into P3D and so lots of things were probably missing...I am now going to install it into P3D and I think it may look pretty different.

Hang onto your installers for these sceneries for doing it all again in Version 2 :)

I have now got all of Tongass Fjords working and made a very short video of the Beaver doing a water landing at Sitka.

Hi Peter. I've finally got Tongass Fjords working correctly and Sitka's forest has returned to the sea

But it wasn't easy and it wasn't logical. First I uninstalled it and then re-installed in P3D but the trees were still there! So I uninstalled it and re-installed it in FSX and pointed P3D towards it. Still trees in the sea. So I fired up FSX and it was fine  finally I uninstalled it from FSX and re-installed it in P3D using the Estonian FSX to P3D installer tool that creates a virtual FSX folder within P3D and it now works perfectly. So it wasn't your advice that was wrong, it's the bug in the program that even Holger can't pin down. Anyway - it's done now.

My ORBX scenery with add-on airports I have installed into FSX and have used ORBX's migration tool to point P3D towards it. It's not straightforward as the tool puts a folder with some files actually into the P3D folder so the tool is necessary to do that.

Ian :)

Good idea, Nigel! And I'll be the first customer

All this fiddling isn't as crazy as it sounds. Some of us really like P3D and want to use it for as much of our flying as we can. But there are two main problems. One is that it's under development and may need to be uninstalled again when a new version comes out so we're trying to hive off as many add-ons as possible to save time when that happens. What we're discovering here is what can be kept outside of P3D and what can't.

The other problem is that P3D isn't intended to be backwards compatible and as parts of the code are changed we are finding that some functions on older aircraft and scenery don't work, so we are also seeing if there are ways round it. It's pretty much compatible with FSX stuff but less so with FS9. So if your flying is predominantly in FS9 aircraft then P3D holds nothing but disappointment for you :(

But with a sophisticated new aircraft optimised for P3D flying in likewise optimised scenery, the experience is er, awesome :wasntme:

So think of it as pioneering in a brave new world! We like the shade of greenery on the other side of the hill and are seeing how much baggage we can take with us.

After seeing your dubious landing in the Beaver in your video, Peter, I though we'd better have some rescue cover at Sitka and I've arranged for this to be based at Rocky Guttierez airport ;)

It's really to show you that I've got Tongass Fjords working in P3D and for Paul to see the Captain Sim C130 also installed successfully in P3D. So we're slowly building up the library!

That looks really nice Ian...Try not to station a lookout on the bridge ;)

BTW that video was taken from the tower at Rocky G.

Peter - nice to see the buildings reflected now in those Beaver shots. I've just been browsing the P3D forum and somebody raised the issue of the reflection disappearing when the view level is raised.

LM agreed that they had messed something up but they'll fix it in v2.0. I couldn't imagine a post like that on a Microsoft forum!
