Get the VC 10 running..place in front....full power and blow the prop round
Not so far off Garry -- the recommended method of starting C130s and P3's and even Electra's when GPU/Airstart were not available was to place another aircraft infront of the offending aircraft and windmill start the engine -- Allisons are such amazing engines!

They used to winmill start the Merlins on Canadair Fours by running up and down rhe runway with whatever they'd managed to start on the ramp.

Several guys giving a hefty tug on a rope round on a prop blade was sometimes used by Silver City to get Superfreighters going.

Well you could start number 4 and then whip it's starter off and fit it to number 1...I believe you pretty handy at that Dave...I'll get my coat and while I'm about it, I will make a mark on the calendar :flying:

Hmmm...There is a conflicting event on the calendar but we'll see

I read that with One-Elevens....a certain unit that would go U/S stopping enigine starting (Leif HELP ).

They would start the good one...whip the unit off, fit it to the other engine and get that one started..........an approved operation to get back from afar.

Tony - can you bring your paddles with you? I'm not sure my old ticker will withstand the terror that those big whirly propellor blades might subject it to! If the only alternative is you giving me mouth to mouth, then you'll find a 'do-not-resuscitate' note in my top pocket

I love you guys to bits but standing that close to a Tyne prop even at low ground beta is something I'd rather not do :o We're still actively trying to source a replacement starter for no.1 but although a number of aircraft used Tynes (believe it or not!) only the Vanguard and a-n-other which escapes me used this particular type of starter.. the others being air start. :)

Hey Dave
prehaps one of the worthies on EP can shead some light on a practice Invicta used to use -- I clearly remember seeing them motor all four engines before lighting off #2 - any idea what that was for?

Hi Leif

I don't know off hand but I'll check for you ;-) Though the aircraft were intrinsically the same as 953's.. there were subtle differences albeit small. I know that TCA used Skydrol which necessitated the use of different gaskets and seals though if Invicta continued using it I honestly couldn't say. Lot's of things crop up over the lifetime of something like this.. an example of which is the use of the Start buttons. The manual states UP for 10 seconds then open the HP cocks. The pilot who flew EP into Brooklands recommended 2 secs UP then down to relight which is how we do it now :)

I'll check the Invicta question and get back ;-)

Update as of 15:00 Fri 29th..

It looks very much like the run on the 13th June is on   The plan is for 3 and 4 only at the moment. We don't have time beforehand to get a 'test run' in so the prayer mats will be facing Mecca

Hi Leif,

Only reason I can see to motor the engines prior to star up, is the Tyne, if left idle too long, had a nasty habit of the contents oil tank draining down into the R/H wheel case, the motoring cycle allowed the oil to be pumped back to the tank, must admit we never used this practice at Air Bridge.

Dave,
Would be prudent to drain the R/H wheel case before you attempt a start, it's bound to be flooded after such lenghty period of standing idle, quite simple to do, just pull the little stainless plug, it's situated just forward of the main oil pressure filter.

Robbie.
