No he isn't!

I know it's regarded as sacrilege by many but I find that I have to add mips to most textures and, frankly, can see little if any degradation. If there is any its more than made up for by not having jaggies!

And yes you can apply mips to DDS textures.

Thinking does not necessarily make it so.

For me mips mean fuzzy images :worried:

Usually this is just blurred like not seperating the pinstripes on th peony BEA

With DM stuf they are slightly soft

The most extreme is ths....the frowrd fuse has mips the remainder no mip :o

Hi Guys

I find adding Mips gives me the problem as shown on the DC5 or whatever it is.

there is a known problem with FSX where it will not show your AA as you have selected.

i spent months trying to discover why none of my aa settings made a blind bit of difference.

then after a drive cleaner Pro removal and reinstall of my video drivers i finally got AA to work in FSX.

my model is no different than the default in it's format or textures apart from i don't use Mips in my textures as they couse more problems on a wider range of PCs than no mips does.

I prefer a texture not to show at all until it loaded than spentd 10 minutes loading each mip as it looks poop.

Regards
Rick

Ha, I am alone no more DB!

Without mip maps always looks overly sharp on my setups. More jaggies in the textures & fine lines breaking up into dashes etc.
The effect is pretty mild in a screen shot, but in the sim any kind of motion exaggerates the jaggies and it really shimmers.

It's smoother all round with mip maps and no shimmer.

I do always run with decent Anti Alias & most important high Anisotropic Filtering levels. Don't know if that has any bearing on what others see.

The mega blur that Garry highlighted is something I've battled with when making models. In my FS2004 world it is definitely the result of a problem in the MakeMdl compiler.
The model compiles with a fault causing it to select the wrong mip level on certain parts. It's not the mips themselves that cause it.
I've made models with both FSDS3 & gmax (both MakeMdl compiler) and nearly always end up with one part that will blur badly. Never had it with FSDS2.

In FSDS3 if you change the part order around & recompile, you can get the blur to switch parts & even go away altogether if you are very persistent/lucky.
I did this with the 1-11 & the Comet models and it took ages to get them blur free so I could use my beloved mip maps.

The HS748 has a typical example of the random blur problem on the tail. Rick, Garry and most other FS users do prefer no-mip textures, so it isn't an issue, but add mip maps & you get this (well I do anyway)...
Image

Peter McLeland gave a good tip some time back to get rid of this type of blur though, so it's no great problem for mips lovers either.
He suggested simply tapping the '+' key several times (zoom in) and then tapping the '-' key several times (zoom out) - It all snaps into focus and only takes a second or two...

A personal preference, but I love nips. :kissu:

DM
Sorry for leaving the miss-hit key, but it made me giggle. A true statement if ever there was one.

Hi DM, In your first shot with no mips the lettering is much sharper than on the second, thats why I don't like mips, but the whole texture options thing confuses the hell out of me. I never had a problem with DG's hunter, with mips or without, although with them there is slightly more bluring. Strange stuff. :)

DM..

Is it nips that cause mips then??  I was going to follow that with something that could be taken as being rude so I won't.. except.. no mips with nips please

As with so many other facets of FS.. it's a personal thing and depends greatly on your card and drivers. The point is.. they're easy to add if you want them and easy to get rid of if you don't ;-)

DM, Quick one.... Am I right in saying your textures are by default 32bit non miped?

Apparently some had a problem with my Spitfire PS915 'The Last' textures, with regards to blurriness and mips. Dave G resaved them correctly but personally I didn't see a blind bit of difference. If it helped others then it's fine by me, though.

I may have to give it a shot saving the Hawk textures with mips. Anything's worth a shot...
