Maybe that's the ship Andy G is referring to........

My knowledge of Naval ships is not that great  :worried:

Of course the QE2 is still around if that counts....it should really

Sorry, I didn't realise I was being obscure.

Actually, now I've been doing a bit of digging, I've discovered that a number of the Type 21 frigates that served at the Falklands are also still in servive, albeit with the Pakistani navy.

Oh can you imagine it....'Yes,Minister' style

"send a memo to the Pakistani Ambassador, ask if we can borrow some of their warships for the Falklands 25th Anniversary fleet review.....the Royal Navy's Scow is being used by Prime Minister Brown on his private Loch"

"yes Minister"

"and get some of our chaps to dress up and parade around a bit on them, the public won't know any different"

Slowly slowly, catchy monkey :), or as we say on the docks, one dog one bone LOL.

Options are

Type 21 (drgs avail ) + Wasp ( no drgs )
Leander ( drgs avail ) + Wasp ( no drgs )
Rothesay ( no dgrs ) + Wasp ( no drgs )
County ( drgs avail ) + Wessex ( drgs avil )
Type 42 ( drgs avail ) + Lynx ( drgs avail )
Type 22 ( drgs avail ) + Lynx ( drgs avail )
Type 23 ( drgs avail ) + Lynx ( drgs avail ) + Merlin
HMS Clyde ( drgs avail ) + Lynx / Merlin ?? ( no a/c allocated yet )
HMS Enterprise / Echo ( no drgs )

I've got the rest of today to dredge the web for ship images / drawing sources and then tonight throw darts at the above and pick one and order the relevant drawings.

I know theres already a good Wessex out there but to be honest if and when l'm done that one would be a good year old, thereby avoiding any ( hopefully ) toe treading.

Best

Michael

Addendum, l think HMS Clyde is the new Falklands patrol vessel ?, down there to 'protect' our interests

Hiya Michael,

Yup on Clyde. There's a (not very good) shot of her in E&S under one of my 'If you don't like ships.. don't look' threads. Not very big but looks very mod.. you know the style  No idea what helicopter she'll have mate. The Merlin is a rather large bit of kit.. perhaps too large for a ship of that size

There's also a shot of one of those lovely 'Shipbuilders' models of Andromeda.. my last ship (hint, hint). Not biased in any way but any batch2 or 3 Leander would do the trick.. probably batch1 too (pre Ikara). They looked very odd  Now.. Bristol on the other hand looked just fine with Ikara 'up front' :-#

A County would be the doggies. Lovely looking ships and you have two members here who served on them.. me on Norfolk and Rick on Glamorgan (GlamorousOrgan) It would also be nice to have something fitting to land Brian's Wessex on!!

A Wasp would be nice on it's own but.. perched on the back of a Batch3 Leander, you'd more likely find a Lynx. Who cares.. any port in a storm

Nice selection of 'Maybe's' there Michael. No Blake/Tiger. Did you forget those or give in due to lack of info??

Dave,

Re Blake and Tiger, l'd like to do one of those at some stage, they ship Seakings didnt they ?, Wessex as well ?, the problem is a complete lack of drawings or good photos, its going to be a best guess hit in a lot of areas, and as you well know l try to keep best guess hits as low as possible LOL.

I've amassed quite a collection of 'Leander' images these last few days, not so many Counties though, but enought o begin a half decent attempt at either or both.

HMS Clyde, well tech spec says it'll accomodate all current RN helicopters, which looking at overheads seems to be right as its quite a big deck, though it is only a deck, theres no place to store, just park.

Wasp, yup would be nice but that engine !, ohh that engine, about 2 months work on that alone and you just know your going to have to get it just so, to not do so would be bad cricket old sport  .

Counties, still cant get over the side hanger door ?, l'd hate to manouvre a Wessex round there in any sea state above 4 or 5 !.

Too many choices l'm afraid  .

Best

You're right about the Clyde Michael. The 'wide beam' is all part of a new look at seakeeping (or should that be another look) and will help make her a very stable platform. What sexy bows she has too!!

Sadly.. my ex-wife (as is their want) threw away all of my photo's (cow.. cause she wasn't in 99.999% of em!!) so I have no phots at all from 1973-1986/87 :crying: These years included Hermes, Blake, Norfolk, Wakeful, Iveston and all the ships we sailed with.. pretty much our surface fleet between those years. Damn.. I really HATE her some days and this is one of them :curse:

Blake and Tiger carried 4 Seaking ASW helicopters each. Seems hard to think that 4 helo's of that size would fit into the garage on the back but it illustrates just how big these ships were

The sliding hangar door on the Counties was a giggle wasn't it

I didn't mention the Rothesay Class but it would be nice to see these too. Classic lines with the famous twin 4.5" banger on the front. As you say.. too many choices

Reference the Clyde, as I understand it the flight deck is there to allow helos to use it as a refuelling spot for extended SAR around the Falklands, and to allow easier PAX and Stores transfers. There won't be an actual flight assigned to her in the same way Leeds and Dumbarton Castle didn't have a flight.

As for the Falklands fleet, INVINCIBLE is still around, not sure if any of the SIR class are around as they're supposed to be being replaced by the BAY class. Some of the older RFA tankers may count as well. Not sure if the stumpy 42's still in service were there as I'm guessing the oldest are being retired first.

Oh and one of the reasons the USN ships last so long is that they use something thicker than tin foil to make them out of!!
