Mystery Vessel

Post by Michael davies »

Well this is a flight sim forum and there is a British Helicopter in the pictures so l think this is the right place to post ?.

Ok whats the vessel please, its a Leander, Ikara fitted, location Dover mid 80s, Wasp is XS528.

A name would be nice, l dont recognise the ships crest nor see any markings anywhere to show which vessel it is.

Hi Michael,

Thats an Ikara Leander as you've correctly identified.. possibly Galatea. Sri but I can't remember ships suffixes at this stage in the game but I do know that Galatea (F18) was an Ikara Leander. The letters on the flightdeck certainly look like G A which would fit very nicely

EDIT.. A further check has revealed that Galatea was the only Ikara with the ID 'G' and in fact, the only Leander starting with 'G' so Galatea it is

Michael..

If any further proof were needed.. have a look at the fullsize version of that flight deck shot and compare the ships crest covering the radome to this..

Ah, does this mean we could possibly see an updated Wasp departing the Alphasim hangar in the not-to-distant future.

Brian

Well done, Dave. I was reasonably certain the ship was British but that's as far as I got.

Galatea...saw her last 'parked' in Pompey harbour, between Priddy's Hard and Fleetlands @ 2003,part of the 'mothball fleet'.
IIRC she was stripped of all things useful, the name was painted over, but you could still read the raised letters, and awaiting the scrap-man?

Hi Pete..

No sir. Sadly, the scrap man never got to get his hands on her.. she was used as a target up in the North Sea. The blurb is that she was used for a live torpedo firing but I'm not completely sure. My last ship (Andromeda) was involved in a triple Exocet firing against one of our hulks (that is, Andromeda and 2 other ships fired simultaneously.. or that was the plan. One ship actually didn't fire!!). I can't remember if the ship stayed afloat or if it was finished off by torpedo

Anyway.. she rests on the seabed as a home for marine wildlife

Btw.. I'm not so sure about you getting a new Wasp. I'll say no more :worried:

Thanks Dave, I did wonder, now a Wasp would be nice in time for Falklands 25th though...and I did have a minor supporting role in that conflict
