If I’ve read this correctly http://www.airsceneuk.org.uk/scene.htm (second article down - 13 February 2007 - Leuchars) ‘757 was at one point completely black!
That must have looked awesome.

it was black, for a short time, and many pics are available on airliners.net, but it was actually illegal, so it was painted back to grey very soon afterwards

Why was it illegal DC?? Just curious

753 looks absolutely blindin'

every aircraft that flies, needs to have the colour scheme auth'd by the CAA, especially ones that are as 757 was going to be, as it would stand out in the sky.

Also, the extra weight carried by all the black paint, made the weight and moment incorrect

couple with the fact that 43sqn never actually gained permission via the proper RAF channels, for this scheme, and just painted it 'off the cuff' it was almost immediatly refused permission, on the grounds of incorrect procedure

if you see the very first photos, even the nose is black, whcih shows how much they acutally researched the project, as the Radar cannot operatre through paint, hence why later photos were seen with a replacement nose

I did wonder if it was for any or all of those reasons (excluding the weight of the black paint which I'd not considered) Basically, a faux pas from the word go

Didn't realise they'd even painted the radome. That, above everything else should have been a no no. They're even marked Do Not Paint aren't they!

Tks for that

Thanks for the additional info regarding ZG757, really fills out the brief snippet I found on airsceneuk.

It really does look great in black:
http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1100822/L/

Pity the paint job affected the aircrafts characteristics and made it useless as a fighter  (“Enemy aircraft!?! Don’t be daft my scopes clear! Now stop distracting me I’m really struggling to keep this thing in the air today.â€
