well it goes from bad to worse and all you get from m*sh is no wukkin furries...I find them useless when it comes to help.
Ok here goes the tale of woe
booted PC up yesterday all I got was ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupted replace file. hmmmm not easy if pc wont boot! anyway tried mush recovery cd and that did a brilliant job of installing another windows boot on the pc so now I have a duff one and an incomplete one..pc gets confused and tells me missing HAL.DLL file or corupt.... so I today fit a 80gb ide drive in, reinstall windows to that ...so far so good... edit boot ini file on the duff windows drive so I dont get multiple boots, then replace missing /buggered files.
all fixed.
NO  life is not that easy, still get the missing HAL file on boot and the inevitable hang... so I am now copying all my files to the spare disc 80gb FS alone!! then I will try a reinstall on the duff windows drive. Only doing this as I have spent 2 days friggin about with this pc and don't want to spend another 2 days re loading all the software!
God I hate computers..especially built by that show of......t mush :curse:

I feel your pain, Tony. I've had to reformat this one a couple of times and its a monumental pain in the rear, isn't it.

Just one question...who or what is m*sh ?

m*sh (mesh) are a major computer company that win awards for superb systems...or so the ads say. I have found from my experience to be less than that I won't state the story on an open forum but suffice to say I would not buy a thing from them again

Couldn't agree more Tony, their aftersales service is diabolical :tuttut:

Never experienced Mesh myself but had good experiences with Evesham.

Work in an IT department and all we use is Dell desktops, laptops & servers and found their support to be top-notch for business. So-say Dell's support for home users isn't the best but I can't confirm that.

Ok an update...I finally found what the problem was and PLEASE TAKE NOT IF YOU EVER GET THIS MESSAGE ON START UP ( before windows starts)
NTOSKRNL.EXE is missing or corrupt reinstall.
I went the hard way round to fix this. I won't go over old stuff..
Anyway the cause..THE KEYBOARD!!!! if you get that error message remove keyboard, if it boots up ok thats the problem.
Ok advice line shut.
Today I got a bit nearer a working PC.
I have two problems a hardware conflict, now sorted. The final one... the PC does not shut down itself anymore, I am told that the pc can now be switched off. I have not seen this message since Win98!
I relented and phoned Mesh today went through a stack of things but it seems under the computer icon in hardware / device manager I have ACPI Uniprocessor and Standard PC icons.
the Standard one is working the other is not. Now I am told this is the one I need as it contains the power management rubbish. However Mesh then talked me through a re-install of windows. I put the phone down and thought.. knickers to that and stopped it. I am not sure if this will cure the problems or not..any advice?
like I say its 95% working now just this problem to resolve.

Hi Tony,

I fell foul of a Windows Recovery disc last year on a Novatech system. I think the initial error was 'corrupted or missing boot.ini' Reading the gumf that came with it, the advice given was to insert the recovery cd and at the prompt, select 'Repair'. Didn't sound too painful though I admit I was sceptical of any success. My scepticism wasn't unfounded!!! The recovery didn't offer me 'Repair'.. it went off and installed (or tried to) Windows again :crying:
I got in touch with Novatech and the nice man said.. yes, that was likely to happen! In the event, it turned out to be a dead HD

Well.. the chap I spoke to was helpful and sympathetic. He posted copies of the software required to check my HD for errors which is how I confirmed it was close to ceasing its mortal coil. The folk responsible for writing the 'Recovery Disc' booklet are the ones requiring a firing squad :-$
