Two free programs for producing MPEG1 that you might want to try:

BBMPEG - getting a bit old now, but if it works for you then ok

http://www.divx-digest.com/software/avi2mpg2.html

TMPGEnc - still a free version of this available - all sorts of complexity possible - I use this regularly. For MPEG2 you have to pay.

You have PM.

What final format do you want - MPEG1, or MPEG2?

I'm guessing the former to be most compatible.

WMV would be created from Media Player - could try that too.

Have you tried "Windows Media Encoder"?

On its way back - e-mail slow tonight, particularly as we are on the same ISP. Took longer to arrive than to do the conversion once I'd figured out what codec it was.

If you need anything changing, just shout.
