Dusting off a NB classic

Post by speedbird591 »

The family are on holiday this week and, as well as work, I have a huge list of chores to do before they get back

So I'm going through some of my favourite old a/c to give them an airing

This one has been in the hangar a long time and I thought it deserved a wider audience.

The BOAC livery HAS to be one THE finest liveries ever made, I can't imagine an aircraft that wouldn't look good in BOAC (apart maybe for an MD11, but that's another scene...).

Nice pics there speedy.

I was thinking recently, it would be interesting to see BA do a couple of "retrojets" like Lufthansa, SAS and even I think American have done. You could have a B744 in the above livery, with perhaps just "BA" instead of "BOAC" and how about a A320 or B737 in BEA Red Square? (again with "BA" instead of "BEA")

Indeed, I'm very anxious to see SAS' new A319 in the old Viking livery!

There is a pic of the SAS in the Airliner World I had today

It doesn't look quite right as the metal aereas end up grey in a lot of cases.

As to the BOAC it suites just about everything because it is simple, smart and effective

I'm not a fan of retro liveries as they are applied to types that the livery does not suit.

Also those liveries are a part of history and belong to the contemporary types. I would not like to see a Red Square A320 anymore than I would wish to see a Viscount in the current Union Flag, although it would look better than in the highly dull, boring, depressing Landor livery  .

I also find them pointless given the cost of a paint.

The Red Square it wasn't even applied to all the in service types at the time.......can you emagine a Red Square Dak or Rapide.

I did a 777 in the Golden Speedbird. Looked ok, but didnt look as good at the old seven-four.

I don't think it ever could mate. Only because the 747 did once wear the scheme and like Dave said, it kinda looks good on a Jumbo.

As for the 777 - Like the old saying goes, you can't polish a turd!

They had a go at making one of the 747-136's look retro before being retired, not quite the same as the full liverly but better than nothing.

Hi Rob

I think it was one side only.

Although I take your point about better than nothing, I prefer to see it done properly or not at all.

That 747 was as least an aeroplane that had worn that livery so it's at better than the modern retros that use the wrong types.

It was done for it's last flight
