Does anyone here use a VPN ?

Post by Paul K »

I keep seeing recommendations for VPNs, the latest coming from Malwarebytes, which is about to launch its own. I use Firefox as my main browser, and Mozilla has its own VPN offer too.

I understand the principles of VPNs, but wondered if anyone here uses one, and why. Recommendations are also welcome. :)

Hi Paul,
FWIW;
When I first tried to use Firefox's VPN, I was told that it wasn't available in Australia at the time. Seemed like a good idea, and when it was offered by MB, I took it. TBH, I can't remember how many months have passed since switching it on. Whether I'm just so boring that hackers aren't interested in zapping me, or what, I can't say. I can say that we have not had any attacks, and I have no known negative effects of using the VPN.

I use one from AVG. There are a few sites that you cannot use if you are using one ie National Lottery but doesn't stop you getting the usual spam etc. My other AVG programmes deal with that.

Í don't. Never really seen the point. Useful if you're trying to hide what you do from your ISP, or accessing location restricted content on YouTube, but otherwise.... :dunno:

Thanks for the responses, all. I wondered whether there were advantages to VPN that I didn't know about, but it seems not. Thanks again.

Me too. I can't see why so much emphasis is put on it. As I see it, they are only for people with something to hide.

I'd just like to reiterate here and now, in public and not using the TOR browser ( which I don't have, of course ) that my interest in VPN was merely out of technical interest, and is in no way connected with searching the internet for pictures of donkeys dressed as nuns, which I never have done anyway, and deny to my dying breath, and you'd better come up with proof, matey. Thank you.

Paul don't worry about it. I haven't got anything to hide either but as it is part of my package which I pay for so I may as well use it. If it makes it slightly harder for hackers etc so be it.

The security benefits are largely overrated. Theres an argument that if you’re in a coffee shop on open wifi theres an element of protection, but actually if you’re accessing a secure site anyway, theres very limited additional benefit.
Other than that, the ability to cone from a different region or country might be useful if service in your own region of country are offline for technical reasons etc.

We use it when abroad but that's all. It's useful if accessing UK only TV for example. Paul, I have pictures of donkeys wearing PJ trousers if you're interested?
