An amazing find Paul, though it has deteriorated a lot faster than other wrecks explored, I take it that only just over 300ft deep it is more likely to succumb to the elements quicker than if it were deeper. 60 Lost souls, hope they give the Americans the bell as a monument to those 60 sailors who perished.

On reading the history of USS Jacob Jones, she was torpedoed by a u-boat on 6 December 1917 and sank in eight minutes. As she sank the armed depth charges on the ship started to explode, I am sure this contributed to the poor state of the wreck.

"Oh, what a lovely war!"

Thanks for sharing this Paul, and thanks also to Joe for sharing the additional information. Sank in eight minutes. Those poor sailors didn't stand a chance.

Here's an article from CBS, which includes photos of the ship sinking and the survivors. One of the survivors was Norman Scott, who, as admiral, was killed aboard USS Atlanta during the naval battle of Guadalcanal. So, a connection between the waters off Cornwall and Ironbottom Sound - very interesting.

Thanks Paul.
The picture of the ship sinking is amazing. Those exploding depth charges are shredding the stern of the ship. Wow.
