Correct use of SSD and HD drives for FS9

Post by hobby »

My new computer arrived yesterday afternoon and has an SSD disk (now labelled "C") and a conventional hard disk (now labelled "D"). The W7 operating system is on the SDD. The local IT engineer who set my computer up is not a flight simulator expert but did manage to copy all my FS9 files (aircraft, addon scenery etc.) from my old broken computer onto my new "D" drive.

I now have to install FS9 to be able to proceed - can a technically minded forum member please nursemaid me through the steps required to obtain a fully operating FS9 system once again?

I also use FSGlobal for mesh and FScene for world textures while weather comes along with ASE from HiFi. I need to know on which drive I should install those programs.

I intend later to install FSX on this new computer and will follow the same procedures to install FSX as will be advised for this new installation of FS9 unless otherwise advised.

Hi Hobby..

You already have experience of FS9 on Win7 so all you have to do is do what you did the last time you did a fresh install. Presuming you only had one HD before (your new D drive) you'd have installed it to C drive but I'd not do that now you have 2 drives. Install FS9 and your addons to D and leave the OS drive to do it's own thing. Because some and not all of your old install has been kept (in particular your scenery.cfg) you'll have to re-install your scenery to rebuild the new cfg.

Cannot remember where I saw it, maybe Google, but my SSD C drive has the operating system (W8.1) & only the minimum registry info for FS9 & FSX & my other programs. All my other stuff as well as FS9, FSX, Autocad, Gmax & my personal files are on my HDD D drive. There are other settings I made but they were part of the setup s/w that came with the Samsung SSD, this shuts off Windows continually reading & writing to/from the SSD, thus shortening its life.
Good luck

Hi,

Much time has been saved by a friendly IT specialist saving a lot of FS9 data from my old computer. Fs9 completely installed on my new 1 terrabite hard drive. Basic installation of Fs9 completed last evening with first take off from Tacoma at 20:20 hrs BST in Cessna 172.

Now starting to rebuild scenery library.

FSX will be added later.

It is a long and drawn out process, I had a reinstall I think in April, still not 100% there yet with Fs9 & FSX, Though I have been distracted recently by DCS.
