Real Environment Extreme + Overdrive

Post by Nigel H-J »

OK, this is (hopefully) going to be my last question so you guys can have a bit of a breather!!

Will be getting Real Environment Extreme + Overdrive soon, (waiting for the postman) and would like to know if you chaps who have it installed it into FSX or just created a folder on the drive you have FSX installed and installed it seperately.

The only reason I am asking is that I tried to watch a video from their site on installing but the sound quality of the library computer was such that you could barely understand what the guy was saying equally what I found a bit confusing was that it showed that after Extreme delete / and add + Overdrive!! :dunno: I hope that there will be a manual with the disc but just wonder if you chaps can enlighten me.

Kind regards
Nigel.

It may be easier in the long run for you to get broadband mate. Some ISP's are almost giving it away at the moment and you wouldn't have to use that rubbish in the local library ;)

No idea about Rex I'm afraid. Pointless me buying it until I get something capable of running it :cpu:

Hi Dave, you are right about the libraries but unfortunately for the immediate long term, broadband is a no go at the mo.

Decided to get it as I come just above the minimum requirements so taking a chance and hoping it will run OK. :worried:

Regards
Nigel.

Hiya Nige :)

I don't want to 'push' Plusnet but as they're my current ISP.. I take an interest in their TV ads (noting how much cheaper it is than I'm now paying!) 8) I'm sure their latest ad shows BB is going for around £3pm plus line rental which is cheaper than BT and cheaper still if you pay 12mths in advance. Unless you walk to the library.. that's gotta be cheaper than any form of transport over a month.. for BB anyway and if you have a BT line phone at home.. you're quids in as far as I can see.

Anyhoo.. you know your own situation better than anyone and if it's a no-go.. so be it. Shame though as it's not the 'arm and a leg' it used to be.

Good look with REX. It's one addon I'd really like to get but as any sort of WX kills my system.. REX is not gonna improve things 8) Hope you get it running to an acceptable degree on your i3

Hi Dave, unfortunately will be living on my works pension which will not be that great and presently do not have a landline - only a mobile so unable to take advantage of all these low offers at the moment.

Buying REX and FTX Global is my last treat so to speak whilst I am still earning, they have asked me to stay on for a further 2 weeks until the 27 October as I was to have finished 13 October so for an extra 2 weeks pay I agreed!!

Hi Nigel :hello: ,
I don't know if this helps you, but I installed REX for FS9 into its own REX directory on the only HD in my setup; C:
It works fine with FS9 that way. I guess your query relates to frame rates?
I recently put my FSX to unlimited. TBH, seeing as cinema is 24fps, I really can't see why we should be watching FSX at over 100fps.
Maybe Ben can offer something here?
A)....does 100+fps put a strain on the computer? or
B)....does putting the brakes on and limiting to 30fps strain the computer?
C)....quite frankly, my dear, does the computer not give a damn? :dunno:

Mike..

FSX is very much horses for courses mate. On some folks systems.. it seems to run better set at unlimited but on others, the convention is to set FR's according to refresh rate (freq) of your monitor.. that being, if your monitor has a refresh of 60Hz.. set your FR's to 30fps. If it runs at 50Hz.. set your FR's to 25fps e t c. I had my old system setup for unlimited as it seemed to run better. My E8400/GTX560Ti runs better locked at 30fps (half the monitors refresh). There is no hard and fast rule as all pc's are different ;)

With my FSX locked at 30fps, I see 29+ for the most part with vis set to 20nm and very high cloud (40k plus). If I add real weather using the default clouds with say ActiveSkyAdvanced.. my 29+ gets kicked in the teeth pretty hard and I can't stand to see the sim run that poorly. Moreover, it is more prone to OOM's (which I suffer anyway unless I fly in the Outer Hebrides!!) hence.. no 'active' weather :( There are tweaks I could use but on XP 32-bit (any 32-bit to be honest).. their effectiveness is only slight if at all.

I get higher frame rate if set to unlimited. Even if I'm in a situation where I'm getting say 25fps with the limiter at 30, setting it to unlimited the rate will jump up maybe 5fps. Having said that, the sim is more stuttery, and the blurries can occur more readily, especially at speed, so I normally have it locked at 30.
Try both and see what works best for you.

Hi Mike,

No, question was really about where to install Rex for FSX as I have FSX on a seperate drive and was wondering whether to install into C:/ Programmes or create a new folder on the drive where FSX is and install there. I have heard that REX should not be intalled into FSX and just wanted to know if that is correct and whether it is OK to install onto the same drive but not into FSX. Confusing aren't I?

The frame rates related to my previous post regarding DX10, found that it was slower than DX9 after a lot of switching to and fro between the two. As both Daves' have said it is all about trying both and seeing where you get better performance, for me it is having unlimited frame rates as limiting them to say 30 they usually end up in the lower twenties.

Nigel.

What you're after Nigel is overall smoothness. AS DG has said.. you will undoubtedly 'peak' at much higher FR's with your system set to unlimited but it may well be at the cost of overall smoothness.. less jerkies e t c. :)
