Welcome to China Central TV!

Post by DaveB »

Hi Chaps :)

Wonder if any of you can help with a problem.

My uncle has had SkyTV for yonks.. just the basic package.. nothing extra. Last year, he made the leap of faith into the PC era and bought a laptop. As he already had Sky, I suggested he try their broadband which he did. It seems to work fine other than it's speed which is rubbish. On Speedtest.net, the highest I've seen is about 1.7-1.8mb despite the line being capable of much faster. That's another story.

When he turns his TV on, he now see's a screen saying 'Welcome to China Central TV' with a message saying he's not compatible. Problem is.. he doesn't want to be compatible.. he just wants rid of the screen. I've had a quick dig on't net and from what I've found, the channel is aimed at foreign ex-pats so they can watch their own TV on the internet. I've seen loads of threads describing how to take advantage of this but none showing how to get rid of the screen. I've looked down his channel listing and it doesn't show.. this may be because it's coming off his Sky Broadband line (I presume) and he's not subscribed.

Anyone know how to get rid of this :dunno:

Hi Dave. Probably not much help but I do have the full Sky channel pack and I can confirm that China Central TV is not listed - apart from CCTV News which is their English language offering. So you must be correct in that it's coming from an internet connection. That's only helpful in that it might save you wasting your time phoning Sky TV.

My BB is BT so no help there.

As to the Sky BB speed my in-laws have the free basic BB which gives them about 1Mbps. The installer told them that that if they pay for a higher speed it is available. They're happy with the speed so I can't confirm if that's the case.

Good luck

Ian :)

Hi Ian :hello:

Even if your post wasn't directly helpful, it's support and as I feel completely helpless.. indirect support is better than nothing believe me ;)

Regarding his BB speed.. we both come off the same exchange. I'm about as far away as I can get (you've seen where I live on Google Earth) and manage close to 6mb off overhead phone lines. He's much closer to the exchange and thinking about it.. his line may well be underground. When Sky tested the line before he subscribed to BB, they reported at least 4mb (which is the BT baseline speed for that line). I've checked his ping and it's woefully slow at over 40ms. I'm certain it could be improved and he says he's going to phone them but as yet, he's not. I've tried to explain the benefits of a quicker line but even using 'basic' language.. I fear it goes over their heads. They're both in their late 70's and it's easy to confuse them  I've tested their line using both network cable and wireless and there's little change so whatever is happening isn't down to losing signal off the wireless hub. At my house.. their laptop gives similar speeds to any of my pc's so the problem is with their line. It's not free for them either but their allowance is unlimited.

All this is secondary to the problem at hand. My aunt can use Google and has found ebay so she's happy

This CCTV welcome screen has only appeared since they went SkyBB so ultimately, it may be worth them phoning Sky as all their equipment is from them. I've looked on Sky to see if I can find an answer but as you'd expect.. there's nowt 8) Wish I knew more about Sky, SkyHD boxes and the relationship between them and their BB but I don't :( Their telephone was with Sky before they took BB and the CCTV message wasn't present then.. only since they took BB.

He may eventually phone up (or I may on his behalf). It'd be easier for my cousin (their son) to do it as he has good hearing but he doesn't seem particularly interested 8)

Thanks for your input anyway mate ;)

I'm with Sky Broadband and get download speed of 1.44mbs and upload of 16.28mbs. :wall:

It's dire, I wouldn't mind but I'm not even in the middle of nowhere.

It's a good deal though as I get plenty of channels, phone and BB for a good rate. If I remove the broadband from the package my TV fee goes up by an awful lot.

I do most of my downloading, whee possible at my cadetsquadron. We have a fantastic BB as were town centre. Unbelievably fast!

It may just be Sky, I'm not sure.

Hiya Paul :)

There are good and bad stories about all providers I suppose. My uncle was with Virgin before going to Sky. Not sure why he quit with them but he wasn't happy about something. Had he stayed and taken their BB, it would have been a darned sight faster than he's seeing now!

Your home BB is wild.. it's @rse about face. I've never known an upload speed to exceed a download speed :-O

Paul thats wrong, really wrong! You should be onto your ISP to straighten that out...

Dave, is the TV plugged directly into the internet and is the channel displaying this via sky box? IE does freeview channels on the TV show the same message?

Hi Chris :)

Their TV was setup by Sky a while back and is connected to the SkyHD box. No one turned up to install BB for them (shoddy) so I did that by plugging the filter into the main socket then a cable from there to the Sky wireless router.. same as any other setup. They connect wirelessly to the internet via the router. As far as I'm aware, there's nothing else plugged to the router. I know that Sky TV users are wired to the phone lines (though why, I've never sussed). I can't see how an internet service is getting to the TV.. it just doesn't make sense *-) The only commonality is as I mentioned.. SkyTV users are connected to phone lines and they now have Sky BB :dunno:
