Help with forum and iPad

Post by TSR2 »

Hi chaps,

I was just chatting with Eric and he was saying that he's having trouble posting on the forum using his new iPad. It works fine when he is connected on wireless at home, but on 3g it doesn't remember his login details. So when he goes to submit a post, it prompts him to login again each time. It sounds like a setting for cookie control to me, but as I don't have an iPad I can't check. Could any of the chaps with an iPad let us know if there are any settings that he needs to change to make the forum work properly?

Many thanks.

I just posted a reply saying that mine didn't do that and suggesting some settings to try. My time would have been better spent by actually checking

I just turned off the wifi and tried it and mine does the same. It doesn't stay logged in when using 3G. I'd never noticed before because I often log out anyway.

I can't see any obvious reason for it - the only settings that I think can affect it are in settings/safari or in settings/cellular data but there aren't many options. I'll have a fiddle about after I've had my sausages but I think it's probably a Steve Jobs easter egg

Cheers Ian.

I wonder if it sees 3G as less secure and thus stops cookies working when connected that way?

Well, it looks like the setting that is doing it is this one:

Settings/Cellular Data/Data Roaming

Data Roaming is switched off by default to avoid unexpected charges when using the cellular network. If it is switched ON then CBFS remains logged in after being closed down and reopened. However it logs out if the iPad is completely shut down and rebooted.

When Data Roaming is switched OFF then it doesn't retain the login status when using 3G.

On wifi it stays logged in unless you log out manually.

So there you go - Data Roaming protection is the answer!

Ian :)

Thanks Ian and Ben.As I explained to Ben,we've recently changed to the iPad mini from the iPad2 and although this problem happened on the 2,it seems to happen more often on the new one.On both pad I kept Data Roaming turned off.
The same thing happens on iCloud probably for the same reason.I can also use BT hotspots but I don't think I've tried replying/submitting on the forum yet.
Next time I'm out and about I'll try turning roaming on.I'll also try to remember to turn it off! :) EricT

Hi Peter, have you ever tried posting or replying to a posting when using a BT hotspot? If you have the free BT WiFi app. There are thousands of BT hotspots around the country which are free to use if you are a BT customer.Very handy if there is no free wi-fi or iCloud available.Forgive me if I'm teaching granny to suck eggs! :) EricT

Yes, I have done that Eric...But I don't get to travel around very much. I did try the free half hour in a Premier Inn a few months ago but it was so slow that it was not worth using and certainly not worth paying for. I do have a Bad Elf GPS for my iPad and it works well but my Tom Tom Live does all my navigating for me so the iPad is really a bit redundant in the car :)
