Not being a rich rail employee, I couldn't afford all these £20-odd airports anyway

Not yet, Dave! Not yet! I've got too used to my mountains, forests, wilderness and fjords scenery. I can see fields and hedges out of the window without spending money recreating them on a computer screen
I'll reconsider when I see the first of their WWII era fields. I could see me flying England in a 40s setting. We already have the aircraft!
As for the rail thing, well, it's difficult to deny that the rewards are fairly generous compared to the commitment required

Evidenced by the fact that I'm now well into my second year past the state pension age and have no intention of either leaving or drawing the state pension. I'm on a 35 hour week anyway so cutting down my hours just meant turning down overtime

The Unions are so strong that it's almost impossible to get sacked unless you steal something or kill somebody. I offer a daily prayer to Saint Bob Crow and give thanks that he's on my side. Management and government are terrified of him as he could bring the transport system to a virtual standstill.
I know it's wrong and that this sort of militant trade union is 50 years out of date. It will be killed off eventually and from my personal pov if it means I have to work more 'efficiently', then that'll be my cue to leave. The battle to reduce the taxpayer's subsidy of the railways hasn't started yet but it will definitely be bloody. At the moment it's subsidised nearly 50% by the taxpayer and just over 50% by the users (also taxpayers) who can't afford to pay much more. Efficient working practices are all that's left to aim for, but Saint Bob is ready for them
I think the railways must be the last dinosaur left of the old state industries (including the dockers and printers and state airlines of course!).
