de Havilland Mosquito

Post by HAMISH »

I am using Windows 7, 64 bit. I have been attempting to install.Dave Garwood's de Havilland Mosquito B.Mk1V in my FSX.

The programme appears in my 'C' Drive/Prog. Files (x86)/MS Games/MS FSX/SimObjects/Airplanes and in 'C' Drive/Prog. Files (x86)/MS Games/MF FSX/Effects (as a separate file).

In the 'Select Aircraft' list, the picture of the aircraft is shown above Cessna C208B Grand Canyon and the text 'de Havilland Mosquito B.Mk1V' appears below a picture of a Cessna C208B Grand Canyon.

I believe I have installed the programme in accordance with the Read Me notes.

Clicking on 'Fly now' does nothing.

Other additional aircraft that I have added are 'Avro Lancaster (imported from FS9), 2 x Avro Shackleton Mk 3 (from Britsim), a DC3 (from DC3 Airways) and more recently a Spitfire. With the exception of the Avro Shackletons, a picture is shown although the text does not always match the picture. It would seem that installing additional aircraft is at the expense of all the origianl aircraft/variations.

I can live with that at the moment but how do I get the Mosquito to fly? Advice would be appreciated.

Hi Hamish,

Win 7 can be over protective of the "program files" folders and sometimes installs can go wrong because of that.
can you look in the "simobjects/airplanes" folder and confirm the mosquito folder is there. Inside the mosquito folder you should see an aircraft.cfg file, a Biv.air file (the name may be different, I'm not at the PC at the moment, so can't check the actual name) and panel, model, sound and various texture folders.

Sometimes if add-on aircraft do not have thumbnails for the texture schemes, the pictures and names can get out of sync. Check your other addons that don't show a picture and see if they have thumbnails in their texture folders.

Further to the above:-

The Lancaster does not appear to have a Thumbnail (ex FS9), but the DC3, Spitfire,Shacks and Mosquito do show Thumbnails.

The files/folders read:-
Model.biv
Panel
Sound
Texture
Texture DK333
Texture DZ360
Texture DZ421
Texture DZ461
Texture DZ548
Texture DZ633
Aircraft
dh 98 B1V.AIR
Mosquito Pilots Notes.

Does this suggest anything?. Thank you for your interest.

Ok, it looks like all the files are there.

I know it the thumbnails are out of sync, you don't always get the aircraft you are expecting, so that may be why the Mossie isn't loading when you click on it, so I think we need to get that sorted out first, then see if there is still a problem with the Mosquito.
Can you temporarily move the Lancaster out from the simobjects folder, then start FSX and see if the thumbnails are correct.

That'll be UAC causing issues in Windows 7 by protecting the Program Files folders. I turned UAC off soon after getting my PC with Win7 installed and have FSX installed in Program Files (86) and have no issues with anything.

Disable UAC - http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows- ... ows-vista/

As long as you have proper protection (AV and anti-malware) and check all downloads there's no reason to have it on.

Thank you for your continued interest. Regret problem still not resolved.

I moved the Lancaster out of my 'C' drive and 'deleted' the entry. restarted FSX but problem remained.

I noted that in 'Select Aircraft' a shadow aircraft picture was displayed under a question mark; above text for both the Avro Lancaster B.111 and the Avro Shackleton MR 3. (I had not touched the Avro Shackleton entry)

If I attempted to fly the Mosquito a dialogue came up saying MS FS is not responding and my screen was greyed out.

I tried resetting my UAC to zero but that did not solve the problem.

Doesn't FSX like Avro?

FSX will display a silhouette if it can't find a thumbnail, but sometimes it does get messed up. If you're still getting text for a Lancaster after removing the Lancaster folder, I'm not sure what's going on

Ben is right, FSX doesn't like being in the program files folder. Best practice is to install it somewhere else, preferably on a separate drive to Windows.

One thing, do you know what version your FSX is, original, sp1, sp2, Acceleration or Gold? If it's the original version, I'd advise you to updated it to service pack 2 as the Mosquito won't work on the original release version.

Thank you for your replies.

I am using MS FSX GOLD Edition including FSX De Luxe and Acceleration Expansion Pack.

Version 10.0.61637.0.

Having installed a SSD in the belief that it was superior to a standard hard disk, especially for flight similation, I do have a spare hard disk installed.

I will reinstall my FSX to this disk.

I am most anxious not to lose the modified DC3 sent specially from America. How would you advise preserving this programme?.

I take it, that it is necessary, to uninstall FSX and reinstall it in what will be Disk 'F'?.
