Lundy Island

Post by 602cc »

Can anyone advise if there is a fix for my sunken Lundy Island on FS9. What I see at the moment is a collection of houses and lighthouses floating on the water and a few hunf#dred feet high cliff for the airstrip. This I think is from Nick Ryalls SW scenery. I also use UTE and FSGenesis Next mesh. I've seen a file for a fix on the Scenery Soloutions webpage by 'Hasse'. I've yet to try it. I'm sure Lundy is on the default scenery so what overwrites it?
Thanks.

Hello Mate..

It's been a while since I've used FSGenesis mesh but you can bet your bottom dollar that what you're seeing at Lundy is a result. Let me go and have a look using Getmapping/Horizon/VisualFlight VFR Photoscenery and mesh.

EDIT: Using VFRPhoto and Terrain, while Lundy can't be considered blisteringly accurate, it's there and all Nick's buildings are in situ ;) Try disabling Genesis (depending on how you installed it) then have another look. Shame if it IS Genesis. I used this for ages and was pleased with the overall look it gave the UK. It's not Nick's buildings and lighthouses as they'll sit on whatever they're given to sit on. The airport (cough) seems to be sitting at it's default alt. Have you tried landing on it? I wonder if you'll go straight through *-)
Anyway.. it's fine here using VFRPhoto and Terrain ;)

Thanks, yes I think it is FSG, it seemed ok when using the VFR terrain mesh. No Lundy fly outs then :S

Hello Mate..

Any particular reason why you've stayed with FSG over VFR Terrain? I could never see a great deal of difference between the 2 and only opted for VFR Terrain to match their VFRPhoto Scenery *-)

Good question, probably because I paid for the 19m mesh! Plus it covers Scotland and Ireland which the VFR mesh did not. I may go back to it though and find some other for Scotland. When I had the VFR scenery installed I didn't have the mesh set to the highest in the .CFG file so that could make a difference. On another point I can't decide whether to install the VFR scenery again, I think I've got to used to UTE.

Hello Mate :)

Understood ;) This is what happens over a period of time when newer, better stuff comes out. Do you spend more money buying one thing to replace another you've already bought or do you stay put. Difficult to decide what to do.
I must have been lucky with Genesis.. it was the one and only free 'demo' area and happened to cover the UK. I still have it.. just in case ;)

The problem with VFRPhoto is that it was designed for FS2002 but 'worked' in 2004 with limitations.. sea textures being one. VFR Terrain was supposed to correct all that was wrong (a lot being coastlines) and offered replacement for other areas getting rid of a lot of the 'over red' tiles and others. Having VFR Photo and no other obvious replacement, there was little choice but to buy VFR Terrain. That's one reason why I've never bought UTX. There are times when having too many choices can be a pain!

Sri that Genesis seems to be the culprit with Lundy. Such a small place but if you go there often and suddenly it's sunk, it kinda takes the edge off. Is there anything Nick could do I wonder? I appreciate he's not responsible but you never know. Perhaps the FSGenesis team could offer advice. It is after all, their mesh that's causing the problem. I hope you get it back anyway ;)

There was a fix for the Genesis mesh in FSX. I no longer use FS9.

Just a few teaser shots taken this evening. Out of Culdrose in the UKMIL Buccaneer.

I am rebuilding my lovely FS9, but I haven't done the UK yet. At the moment I am using FS Global 2010 in both FS9 and FSX. I just looked at FS9 and Lundy is there OK, but Steep Holm and Flat Holm are not, presumably because they are not in the default mapping. To get the Severn Estuary/Bristol Channel looking right calls for the VFR/GM photoscenery and VFR Terrain, plus the NOK freeware coastlines. Correct layering in the Scenery Library is critical too.
If you Google NOK coastlines, you should get a link to a VFR Forums topic, which in turn leads you to a link for the coastlines file.

The Dark Side can look very good indeed, but the Toys-For-Granpa Fund is not healthy enough to cover all that lovely add-on scenery at the moment. :((
