I don't mean recently, but this afternoon I watched the film, "A Yank in the RAF." Tyrone Power, the hero, was in a Lockheed Hudson aircrew, bombing Berlin. Did the RAF really bomb Berlin with Hudsons? I thought the Hudson was used mainly for anti-sub missions, and bombing missions were flown by Sterlings, Halifaxes, and Lancasters.

Hi Art,
I dont believe they did, this soulds like Holywood reality, although I may be proven wrong

Re: Did Lockheed Hudsons bomb Berlin?
I'm sure they didn't
The type was used by Coastal Command as a main shore based mount in the early part of the war stepping back a bit when the B-17 came on line
They were expensively used in Norway after the occupation and played a support role in D day getting special role personnel behind the enemy lines and in the Far East.
But It was never a front line mass bomber, more a patrol hunt and kill aircraft operating over a wide area.
It could be the odd one in the right place at a loose end dropped a bomb of two there, but planned Hudson bombing raids on Berlin sounds more like Hollywood promoting a US design

Re: Did Lockheed Hudsons bomb Berlin?
Plus the film was made in 1941 (released Feb 1942) so any front line bomber would probably be too busy to be side tracked for a film so they probably used whatever home based and locally flying aircraft that were available. Hudsons being used by coastal command during 1941 - http://www.historyofwar.org/articles/we ... hudson_RAF
