I've been visiting FSX a lot recently and have populated it with as many FSX Alpha models as I can find. However, some have really ropey props.. the Texan/Harvard is one.. the Hampden is another. Did anyone out there get the prop updates for these? Reading bits and bobs on the web, it seems that some of the FSX 'versions' were pre-SP2 and this accounts for the ropey props (prop blur I'm talking about).
If anyone has decent looking prop blur textures on either of the above, I'd appreciate copies please. I am, of course, a fully paid up member of the club but I've only really used the FS9 versions thus far which is why I missed getting the FSX updates before Alphasim disappeared
Dave, I had some curious FSX Hampden prop disc problems, though not quite the same as yours. Mal at SOH sent me three .dds textures which replace the default BMPs entitled Prop, Prop2 and Prop_3. They improved things no end ( within the limits of SP2 that is ), so you might find them worth trying. They are already zipped up, would you like me to email them to you ?
Garry's spot on, props from port over in FSX are pants. Garry has managed to do a great job with the 170 and Brit etc, but really it need to be done using the FSX tools to work "prop"erly ala DG's Rapide / Beaufighter.
Yes Garry.. I'd read also that a lot depends on the model (as I've found out with other models). I'm not sure if Alpha gave a model update as well as the new textures.. I wasn't that interested in FSX back then Virtavia now sell the Texan (and others) so I'd presume they're fully SP2 compliant. Looking back through my airfiles, the Hudson is dated around April/May '07 and those props are fine as are all others after that date. The Texan/Harvard and Hampden are pre April '07 and are the only ones I've found that suffer.
Paul..
Yes please As long as the file isn't too big, they should be ok to come here.. dave at cbfsim dot org (with relevant spaces/at/dot removed/changed)
One more option you could try is to find some props you like in FSX of a similar size and blade count and copy them into your AS folders changing the filename to match the original. I did that on a couple of my port-overs and it seemed to work OK.
Depending on the model and how it was set up you may also have to convert the file from a DDS to a BMP and flip the image vertically. DXTBmp can do this in a couple of button clicks.
Yup.. I've tried this before but a lack of FSX aircraft didn't give me the options I'd have liked. Last one (before the Alpha models) was the Plane Design Lancaster. It stands up very well in FSX although the prop blur textures didn't! I tried numerous combinations and as you'll have found, what looks good on one model doesn't always work on another. For the PD Lanc, I think I ended up with the Flying Stations Swordfish textures which blur quite nicely but have a thin line where there shouldn't be one. The next closest was off DG's Beaufighter but the blur is less defined on the Lanc (no circle.. full blur). Ah well.. such are the sacrifices we have to make
