It makes my blood boil..!

Hi guys,

I have been rather miffed at folk today.

Having been in the City Centre shopping with my lovely and heavily pregnant wife we did the usual trick of catching the train home.
It was around 1800 and naturally the train was very busy, full of shoppers and commuters on their way home.
The platform was packed full of people who all rushed the carriage to get a seat and thus guarantee their journey home.
We were stuck at the back of the crowd and were one of the last to get on the train.

My wife was tired and naturally wanted a seat. Even though people had seen us and the 'bump'. No one batted an eyelid. No one got up.
I was just about to shout across the carriage when I got a poke in the ribs from the wife who knew exactly what I was about to do and stopped me.

"Don't make a fuss!" she said.

Then someones conscience got the better of them and they offered their seat. Result.

What really infuriates me is that my wife freqeuntly uses the train to commute to work and no-one ever offers her their seat.
I think the person that did get up today saw my expression and did the honourable thing before I shouted at someone.

I was always brought up to respect people and my mum always made me give my seat up on public transport to a person who required more than me.

I actually felt proud to get up and offer my seat to another.

Seems no one cares these days.

Haven't been on a train for ages, but do they no longer have signs over the seats closest to the doors saying they must be given up for the disabled or pregnant women?

Or is that buses only, again not been on a bus in years either.

Im afraid its the society we now live in. People only care about themselves and no one else.

Indeed. I would'nt say quite everyone but a high percentage of people just don't want to help anyone or get involved.

In some situations I could'nt blame them I suppose.

But a lack of common courtesy really makes me angry.

To my mind there are no situations where common courtesy doesn't apply...but there is a definite lack of it nowadays.

Many elderly folk are extremely paranoid about being approached by young strangers for obvious reasons.

Good on you for at least trying. Don't let her put you off from helping anyone else in the future.

All of our trains have priority seating with extra leg room and a sign saying to please give it up to someone who needs it. Can't remember the exact phraseology. Unfortunately most of our 'customers' wouldn't understand 'priority', even if they could read.

I'll usually make an appeal to someone if I see the need, but I can't be everywhere and, of course, if the train is that full I can't get through anyway. So in practical terms it's up to our fellow humans to show compassion but consideration of others is no longer instilled in people. If you want to see the worst behaviour of people, the railway is the place to go. Especially at night.
