GAAR 2011 is here!

Post by Chris Trott »

I don't know if CBFS is interested, but VHA is participating so I thought I'd let you guys know too.

Basically, it allows any piston-powered aircraft that first flew before 1950 in the event. You can use later updates/upgrades of that airplane as long as the original version flew by 1950. However, no turbine or turboprop aircraft are allowed under any circumstance (After all, part of the fun is enjoying the view ;)).

All of the airports in this year's race are in the FSAirlines database (just added the missing ones myself) so you can use your personal aircraft or a VA aircraft to fly the routes if your management approves it and adds the routes for the appropriate aircraft. However, be advised when selecting an aircraft that at least one airport has a 1700 foot-long runway, so choose your aircraft wisely. Personally, I am using one our VA's Bristol Freighter for the flight, but I'm sure there's others that would work from the CBFS VA fleet like the Viking or the Dragon Rapide. :)

Hi Chris :hello:

Tks for that. No idea if anyone will be interested but thks for the HU ;) Oh.. I wouldn't try doing it in a Viking if some of the runways are down to 1700ft long.. unless of course you could go by road

I'm surprised. Over on the GAAR forums they're talking about successfully getting the Hastings in and out of there, why wouldn't a Viking make it?

Hi Chris :)

I don't have the Hastings model on my system so can't comment on it's performance mate. It's a type I've never liked and not even the 'Romantic' in me can't be stirred  On the other hand, I'd feel happy about getting a Lancastrian/Halton/York into and out of a 1700ft strip! I wonder sometimes if I'm gonna get out of places like Jersey or Guernsey in a Viking and they have 3000ft+ available. Once it's left the grip of mother earth, the Viking is a spritely little lady.. easily outperforming the DC3 it was designed to support. However, it doesn't have what you'd call short field performance.
I don't have any field performance figures here and maybe empty, the old girl will show a side of herself I'm not used to :)

The reason Channel bought Daks was that the Vikings couldn't get in and out of some of the airfields and were not that good on grass.

They didn't operate to Guernsey in the winter in the grass days and couldn't use Portsmouth or Rochester.

That's interesting about Rochester as it has 3 runways..
16/34 3168ft
02L/20R 2712ft
02R/20L 2263ft
To be honest.. Rochester seems darned small in a Rapide, especially the 02/20's so only someone on a mission to end it all would try it in a Viking!

Hello Mate..

You're right, it was Bembridge for the Mk32 and I don't really want to do that again either. The flight I was thinking of (topically) was the Viking. Sandown is/was 2899ft too :-O
