Will FSX run on

Post by austerdriver »

I have been considering upgrading to FSX for a while now and was wondering would my system run FSX

My system as follows:

AMD 3200+ 1.8ghz
2gig of RAM
512mb PCIExpress ATI 3600
80gig hard drive

Also aside question, would somebody be able to tell me if there is an Australian with the ID YPCC is included in the FSX install?

Hi AD..

My main pc until late last year was built around an AMD XP3200+ (though mine clocks at 2.20gb out of the box.. not 1.8gb) with the memory upped to 3gb (specifically for FSX).. a 160gb Sata drive and a 500gb Sata drive for FSX. Graphics card is an nvidia 6800GT 512mb. It runs FSX 'OK' though you will struggle with certain models (DG's Beaufighter for example.. Flying Stations Wyvern). If your 80gig HD is purely for FSX, then I guess it will fit on. If an 80gig drive is all you have.. that is, if the only drive in your pc is a single 80gig drive, I'd not bother or get an additional 'internal' drive to run FSX on. TBH.. FSX isn't going to run anywhere near it's potential but it will run on a system with similar specs to yours.

And yes.. YPCC/Cocoa (Keeling) I Intl is in FSX :)

I also forgot to add that I am running Windows XP Home. Would using the settings I have in FS2004 be used in FSX to get similar performance?

Hi AD..

Using WinXP Home wouldn't matter much in the grand scale of things.. that's what I use too. As for settings, you can pretty much forget what you have in FS9.. FSX is a completely different monster. See what it gives you as a default (FSX will read your system and adjust the settings to what it thinks you can run) then take it from there :)

Would dualcore be the way to go for FSX?

Hi AD..

To be honest.. go for as many cores as you can afford then add a 64-bit version of Win7. You'll then be getting into the realms of FSX running as was intended ;)

Well I'm thinking of upgrading the CPU, adding a bit more RAM and putting a bigger power supply in the case.

Hi AD..

You're running an AMD XP3200 at the moment and you want to upgrade the CPU. That's fine but I can't think of any fairly recent motherboard that will support an old XP3200 and the newer dualcore cpu's. The pin assignments are different.. probably the pins too so you're looking at quite a revamp. There really isn't any quick way to do what you want to do as the old single core 3200 was the limit of that chips technology so it's likely that your motherboard won't go any higher. Moving 'UP' may also mean you can't use your old graphics card in any new motherboard without holding the system back. AGP moved to PCIe and you may find than newer boards will not support AGP.

You're at a pivotal point unfortunately so any upgrade will require more than a new cpu, a bit more ram and a more powerful psu. Think more along the lines of a new system.
