Freeware RAF Valley/UKVFR prob

Post by DaveB »

Hi Pop-Pickers :hello:

I'm slowly building my FSX world (the UK anyway) up to a similar sort of standard I have in FS9 and following one of the links Trev advertised (possibly basys too at some point).. downloaded RAF Valley/Mona from the Horizon forums. All seems to work fine with the exception of 2 rather large hangars which display as black/untextured. Does anyone else have this scenery and if so, do they also suffer the untextured hangars (not worth posting a screenie as these 2 are the largest hangars there so anyone with it will know which ones I mean) :)

The scenery loading convention for FSX seems no less confusing than FS9 with each developer throwing textures in their own preferred places.. which doesn't help! 8) In order to use RAF Valley, I had to also download all 3 base sets for RWY12 making them an FSX version of the Static Objects Library. To use Trev's Hamble, I had to download a further 7 sets of texture/object libraries towit Trev advises making these into a new scenery area in 'Addon Scenery'. Some of the authors along the way advise putting the sceneries/textures into 'Global/base' in the MAIN texture folders.. some say use the Static Objects Library and not one thus far (as far as I can see) has said to use the Addon Scenery 'Scenery' and 'Texture' folders which currently sits empty in FSX 8) To my mind.. I can't see any reason why the second lot of libraries couldn't go into the Static Objects Library as this is, after all, what they are or.. the Addon Scenery/Scenery and Texture folders as that's what it's there for.

And developers wonder why folk complain about having missing textures! *-)

Hi Folks

Dave -
I don't have that scenery installed,
though your issue may be as per some of Trev's users,
where a duplicate library bgl is active on your system,
without a matching linked texture set alongside.
The scenery loading convention for FSX
I'd consider that as installation.
So true.
Inappropriate use of default folders
appears to be a widespread developer community issue.

What's even more annoying, and FPS impacting,
is some creators continued use of FS8/9 model libraries,
and the reliance on a user's PC's horsepower to overcome this.

Same goes for inappropriate convertsion and renaming of textures.

Mostly pure FSX
Isn't !!!

EDIT
Somehow lost a chunk of this post when submiting.

Utter frustration is a good way to describe it. I know for a fact on my old XP3200.. I had duplicate libraries all over the shop in order to get a tree to display or a building to display. However, this isn't the case with FSX on this pc (though it's true.. many of them are or maybe active in FS9). All were downloaded fresh specially for Valley/Mona and Hamble so all the ones installed are the 7 raf files mentioned in Hamble from Ted Andrews plus tesdraft.zip and ukvfr.zip plus the aforementioned 3 base RW12 libraries. I noticed one anomaly with Trev's instructions as he said to put all the raf contents into a scenery folder and tedsraft into the texture folder. However, rafbldv2.zip contains a dds file so in keeping with known convention, I put that into the texture folder too.

Anyway.. that appears to be the least of my problems. I updated to the latest nvidia driver yesterday so that I could use nhancer (this to get rid of FSX jaggies!) and while having another look in FSX this morning.. not only did the sim die.. it killed the system which needed a reset button press to get it running again. Ah well.. so close and yet so far 8)

Dave -
Sounds like a driver conflict.

Drivers are often issued with different names.

If so, your fsx.CFG
might now contain multiple [DISPLAY.Device.DRIVERNAME] sections.

e.g.
[DISPLAY.Device.ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000.0]
[DISPLAY.Device.ATI RADEON MOBILITY 9000.0]

Try renaming your fsx.CFG as fsx_20100121.CFG

Now launch FSX
and it'll build an new and appropriate fsx.CFG.

Hi Dave, :hello:

I don't have that scenery ATM but for what it's worth I always install scenery addons (freeware) to my own folder outside FS, then activate the scenery as usual. Each subfolder, texture and scenery, has it's own name so I know whats in it.

The benefit is that I know where everything is and it's easier to check for conflicts or missing textures. If FS needs to be re-installed then I backup the scenery.cfg then copy and past to the new one. Having everything in the same folder also makes it easier to put on disc.

Downside is that it takes a tad longer to load but at least I know where everything is ;)

No mate.. not completely the wrong end of the stick but again, this highlights yet another preference. I've always put addon scenery in addon scenery.. I even put my traffic files in there (in different, named folders) so that I can work on them then throw the finished article into scenery/world/scenery. It means I end up having two but only one is active and the other remains WIP. At least I know where all my addons are doing it this way ;)

Paul.. renaming issues would have been a nice one but not in this case amigo. The only rerefences in my cfg are for the card I have.. that is, the name hasn't changed. I could always rebuild it though cause at the moment.. I have little to lose :)

Ben.. I've looked at it withoug nhancer and what I see is the same as the old driver.. crap AA. At least the old driver was reliable so I may just put up with it looking rubbish in the new one ;)

I think a trip to Reading to get you sorted may be in order Dave.... :wasntme:

I can pop over in a week or 2 and have a looksee if you want...i reckon its an easy fix for the card...?

I use driver 188.20 and found this one very stable with FSX....might be a conflict going on with Nvidia control panel and Nhancer to cause the crash...?

Lemme know matey..?

Hello Mate :hello:

A conflict between Nvidia Control Panel and nhancer... :-O SH!TE.. who writes these programs 8)

In the meantime, I've reset the nhancer profile back to what it was and FSX looks the same as it did (jaggies) but didn't crash the PC. I don't see any difference in FSX between this driver or the old dog you advised me to get when I got the card.. the only difference is that I can use nhancer now (at my peril) as the old driver was too old ;)

Let me go and see if those two hangars are still black or have gone invisible again :worried:
