Anyone know if a British ATC voice is available for FSX?

Post by davem »

Hi all,

following on from the 'callouts' thread a few below, does anyone know of the existence (free/payware) of an up-to-date (or old!) British ATC voice package which can be used in FSX?

I'm tired of getting Leuchars ATC talking to me in a female American accent calling it "Lockers..." :S

TIA,

Dave.

You can get radar contact with UK voices. The only downside is, they only say the names of few airports, otherwise you'll get clearance to EGQL.

Still no SIDs or STARs in radar contact, though. Plus it does throw a hissy fit if you fly outside 4nm of a waypoint, which is restrictive for a large jet to make tight turns in certain airspace.
I like this flight simming, it's fun.....

That's true but, although there are many good reasons why Radar Contact is invaluable for anyone flying in the UK - a proper altimetry system (none of that 18000ft Transition Altitude here), and standard ICAO phraseology for (most) RT transmissions, for example - I wouldn't recommend Dave to buy it for the voices alone. There aren't really enough UK voices to avoid getting a repeat voice on anything but the shortest trips although there are a number of other non-American voices you could use to pad the numbers out. The voices themselves also come in for some criticism - users either love them or hate them - but a non-team member who calls himself "Meatwater" has released a modified (freeware) set of voices which everyone seems to be raving about although I've not tried them myself.

Depends what you mean by "no SIDs or STARs in radar contact". You won't get clearance to fly a particular SID or STAR but it's a simple matter to get RC to allow you to fly them. If you want to know more, pop over to the Radar Contact forum on Avsim where advice on this subject is regularly given to those who aren't keen to RTFM :D

Not sure where the 4nm comes from but RC requires you to pass within 2nm of a waypoint in the departure phase and 5nm of a waypoint in the en-route phase.

Dave, I think I'd better leave the subject of Radar Contact there to avoid taking this thread too far off topic - and getting it moved to "Payware" or E & S" ;) - but if you do want to know more about RC and its voices, feel free to PM me.

Don't know where you get that from. But in RC, they do use transition altitides well below 18,000ft. How accurate they are, is another matter.

I know Ant, that's what I said but I think you've misread what I wrote. I was pointing out that RC doesn't use the standard US Transition Altitude of 18000ft in the UK as the Flight Sim ATC does.

Well, I can assure you the UK Transition Altitudes are 100% accurate - I did them!

PS If you'd like to chat some more about RC feel free to PM me.

Yes you're right, I did mis-read it

But some of the TA's aren't accurate with the more recent airfield charts information. Obviosuly this is dependant on when RC was put together and with what information was used.

Can you be more specific? PM with which UK airfields you think are wrong and I'll check them out.
