Unable to Access Camera USB

Post by Nigel H-J »

Could really do with a quick response if anyone can help.

Have a FujiFilm Fine Pix 4800 Zoom Camera software worked OK i.e. able to access camera on computer to view photographs now when I plug in it says USB Device Not Recognized and cannot access camera pictures anymore.

Uninstalled the software then reinstalled but still get this message.

Started when I loaded software for my wifes' camera which is a Praktica, the software to access it is Sunplus Ca 533a, I just wonder whether the USB driver with that software has knackered the FujiFilm one.

I uninstalled the software and driver of the Praktica camera but still cannot get the USB Driver for the FujiFilm to work.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get it working again? I even did a System Restore to no avail!!

Regards
Nigel.

Hi NIgel..

I think you've done everything I'd have tried with one exception.. have you tested the USB socket on the pc to see if it works?? Plug a joystick in or something like that.

An easy solution (though not a fast one) is to get a card reader. These have numerous advantages over having to plug a camera in, not least because you don't need any software and you'll probably find they're faster. I've not used camera software for longer than I can remember!

The only disadvantage I can think of is that camera software tends to come with some form of editing suite. If this is 'built-in' and you don't have any other means of fiddling with your pics, you'll have to get something else.

If you feel up to it.. you could try removing all the software again then go into the registry and delete any keys left behind. If you're NOT au fait with fiddling in the registry, I wouldn't recommend you go for this option.

An in-between step of buying a card reader or using the supplied software is to see whether the camera when connected via USB appears as another hard disk.

My new Lumix uses SD-HC cards and my old reader didn't support those. But connected to the PC, the camera card appeared as drive K (or whatever) and I could copy files off the camera like that.

And try another USB port with your camera in case that fixes it.

Hi Ian, many thanks for your advice, had tried that but unfortunately did not work. So, taking Daves' suggestion went into town, was going to PC World :worried: but then decided that as we were right in the City Centre went to Dixons.

Now please somebody tell me, how do they train their sales advisors? Up to the first person I saw and it went something like this:

Me: Hello, I'm looking to buy a card reader.

Him: OK

Silence: :shhh:

Me: I need one so that I can download my pictures onto the computer as the USB Driver for the camera no longer works. (I then produced the card from the camera as thought he might not know what one looked like) 8)

Him: What sort of card is it?

Me: The one your looking at!!

Him: What make is it and how old is your camera as this might not fit.

Me: ?????????????????????? :wall:

Me: After a looooong pause trying and not laugh!! It's a Smart Media (now trying to be clever).

Him: (Looking at the front of the packet and not finding Smart Media) Don't think this might take it.

Me: Oh. *-)

Him: You can try the camera shop up the road..........I did and what's more it was 4 quid cheaper than them!!

Good job me beers are in the fridge getting nice and cold for tonight cause I now need a couple!!

Ah yes.. Dixons. The first of the big retailers to drop all film cameras in favour of digital. Perhaps the chap you got was from the 'film era' The reader I have is older than God's Dog but takes what I have (6into1). Some I've seen kicking around take 10into1 now. I didn't even know there were that many different types of card

Glad you're sorted  You'll find it a lot less cumbersome than farting around with a camera and USB lead ;)

They don't train them Nigel....they're all clones, programmed to say 'it will work, it will work...'

Nigel

I bought a card reader in Dixons when I was away from home and needed one quick - the price made my eyes water compared to one I had bought on Amazon but needs must. Similar experience to you both in Dixons and Maplin - boys reading the packaging to see if it met my needs - I could have done that but was hoping for advice  The guy in Maplin was even trying to convince me that although it didn't say so on the box, it would work with SDHC cards - but if it didn't I could take it back 8)

I just hate the person to person shopping experience - thank god for online shopping.

@DaveB - only 6-in 1? what are you missing out on:

Memory cards...

What gets me is that most manufacturers seem to change these subtle details between models.. sure, with SLR you can carry your lenses on, but usually you find that the memory card and battery are different, so you can't carry all your old kit over....
