FS2004 Scenery query

Post by Bridon Bear »

I am running FSX with VFR GenX all 3 volumes and recently thought that I would get the old FS2004 up and running as on the GenX discs they very thoughtfully include the FS2004 Photo scenery as well.

However....the old FS2004 VFR Photographic scenery was as we all know in 4 separate volumes.

When installing the same scenery from the GenX discs, it is only 3 volumes.....no matter if all is there which I suspect it is...just re-packaged.

I ran the FS2004 and sure enough it is all there...so far so good....but the hills look a tad angular even though there is an FS2004 Landclass included with the above and that is all present in the scenery library.

Went to the FS2004 .cfg and altered the line as was always recommended to...Terrain_max_vertex_level 21 then rebooted but the hills still look angular.

So...undaunted, I dug out the Visualflight VFR Terrain Mesh FS2004....ran the disc and noticed that there was no difference....all appears in the scenery library OK. *-)

However...the VisualFlight VFR Terrain was for the original FOUR Volumed VFR Photographic which has presumably been re-packaged to only THREE.... :wall:

All the VisualFlight forums etc are very old postings so I wondered if any of you have any solutions or work-arounds?

I can also see problems in that the once favoured addons I used to use such as autogen trees from VFR Addons site may also cause headaches as they were intended to be placed in individual sections of the 4 volumes that are now 3.......

Any clues?

Regards

BB -
There was definitely a post in the VF forum, showing the correspondence between the "four sets of three" and "three sets of four". I will see if I can find it, but I don't have time right now, and the VFF search can be a bit idiosyncratic, shall we say... ;)
The VFR Terrain has a coastline matched to the VFGM Photoscenery, which is not in the same place as the FS9 default. 'Coastline' includes inland waters, and the mismatch can give you cliffs beside lakes - is that what you mean by "angular"? The default mesh could not be described as "rugged" - it is all soft rolling hills, not at all like Wales or the Pennines.

Thanks for the reply Emfrat....

I tried to search for that topic on VF forums after reading your post but it is dog slow at the moment and I cannot get any further.

Good to hear that someone else has come across this and has posted on the VF forum....hope one of us can find the thread on there...

Here is a screenshot of the default 172 on runway 09 at Gloucestershire showing 'Chosen Hill' viewed from the R/H side of the aircraft.

Clearly something is not right....it looks more like a view from FS5....!!!

Perhaps someone using FS2004 with VFR Scenery could post a comparison screenshot for me at that location

Hi Mate,

I'll check it later as I have FS2004 and the VFR stuff from the GenX DVD's installed. I should be home about 7 ish so I'll check after that, :)

Thanks a million Ben......this is driving me mad...

As you know...VFR Terrain when installed gives you as well as the mesh, textures and coastlines too. The Terrain install naturally looks for the old 4 volumes ....can't find them as they are now 3 so gives up..... :'(

Thanks mate. ;)

It may be that FS2004 is not capable of displaying mesh to the resolution provided by Gen X and is still trying to display it. Try completely deleting the mesh from Gen X to see what that looks like. Also you have always got the option of the all-in-one install (basically everything gets but into a single Gen X folder but with separate scenery and texture subfolders). Try posting on the Horizon forum - I'm sure George (Ananda) will be able to help you out.

Chris

Hi Chris..

I don't think that is the problem here mate. The GenXv2 discs come with a free version of VFR Photoscenery for FS9 which originally came in 4 parts on multi discs. BB isn't trying to install GenX onto FS9.. the installer asks which version you want to install and and installs the appropriate one for the sim being used.

BB.. mine appeared to go on fine (I uninstalled the original first as I'd not patched it) with all areas ok. I'd not got around to installing VFR Terrain as I'd hoped it was also a freebie with the 2004 software. As it is.. I can't check the new install and VFR Terrain as that particular system is the one lying dead next to me. I'll have a look at how the original looks on this pc though ;) I THINK I uninstalled VFRT on this system as it effed up a number of other sceneries. Will check ;)

You be quite right Dave... I should have checked the disks but I've forgotten where they are! I know there is a difference in possible mesh resolution between the two sims but I can't remember what the max in FS2004 is.

Good luck with the dead beast - not tempted to go for an i7? (go on you know you want to  ).

Chris

Tks Chris. I have just this very second (less than a minute ago) added to basket a brand spanking new E8400 (6mb flavour). I put on my little boy lost look and gave SWMBO an Oscar winning performance and she cracked and said YES  I don't want to complicate things with an i7 as my mobo doesn't support it.. I think. That said.. if the new CPU doesn't work in the current mobo (eg.. the system remains dead and it was a mobo failure after all) I may end up out of circulation for some time. Death can be final in some cases

Back on topic (sri Brian).. yup.. you still have to physically make changes in the FS9.cfg to take advantage of the greater resolution but other than that.. it all seems to work fine. I noticed on the v2 install (FS9 of course) that the CI did NOT have straight edges for coastlines so the fully patched 'at the factory' version has worked. On the v1 originals.. both CI islands (the main ones) had decidedly dodgy coastlines until the coastline patch was installed but this then caused a problem elsewhere. Unsatisfactory whichever way you look at it. My pic above looks pretty much identical to Brians notwithstanding the fact that Brian appeared to have a bit of zoom on and I am using UK2000 Gloucester. That is a v1 install too ;)

EDIT..
I can confirm that the shot above is WITH VFRT Brian ;)
