Monitor Dilemma

Post by T6flyer »

Hello,

About a year ago I asked here on your verdicts about going widescreen. Well, as I've upgraded since then and after having a look at some impressive screens at the Flight Sim Convention at W-S-M last weekend, the idea has come around again of upgrading from my current 17" TFT.

I'm now using a 3.34 Duo Core with 2gig RAM and a 8800GT graphics card and am thinking of going up to a 24" for use with FS2004 only with TrackIR (I have the newer sim, but very rarely use it). Monitors I have had a look at have a native resolution of 1920X1080. Would this be ok, or should I downsize?

I think I realise this from my posts over a year ago, just wondered if my system was up to it (think it is?!) and if anyone else has a 24" Monitor and finds no problems.

It won't be a problem at all... in fact you could run 2 of them!

Hi Martin

I don't know what these big tft's use power wise but the smaller ones don't take a great deal. I run a 19" CRT and 17" tft on an XP3200 with a 6800GT (256mb) without any problems and your setup outguns this many times over. I also run the same pair (KVM switch) on a 6600 dualcore and 512mb HD2900XT without problems. Again, the latter is nowhere near the performance of your setup ;-)

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts on the matter - as always much appreciated.

So thats it then, will order a monitor tomorrow (wont do it today in case it arrives on Wednesday as am out all day retrieving my phone from the helicopter museum at W-S-M). Forgot about the native resolution bit, but then have just thought am already running my sim at 2048X1024, so wouldnt and shouldnt be a problem at all - but its always nice to ask, isnt it? :)

Will let you know how I get on. Now just have to decide what make or model. Would prefer one with VGA and DVI and possibly HDMI.

Best wishes to all,

Martin

I could be wrong here but you will to get best results run FS at the same resolution as your monitor.

Well its too late now......yesterday I ordered a Samsung SyncMaster 2443BW 24" widescreen from Play.com for £219 and knowing that they are very good on delivery times, am expecting it later today or tomorrow. Will let you know how I got along.
