Any HM Customs officers in the forum?

Post by RJP »

As above.... are any of the forum members UK customs officers?

If so, could you please pm me, I've got a (I think very simple) query which I need a little advice on.

Cheers
Richard

LOL :)

All I need to know is........ I've owned a vehicle for apporx 5 years that is stored in Germany. It is not currently registered / on the road there. When I bring it into the UK will I get stitched up by customs for duty / VAT? (Vehicle was bought from an individual, not a company / dealer)

Cheers
Richard

Hi Rich......I was stationed at RAF Gatow and had a lovely Ford Taurus/Cortina.....I loved that car and back in the very early 90's Customs would have screwed me over with import tax even though i bought it from an individual.....so in Berlin she had to stay...... :'(

Might of changed now but i doubt it..... :dunno:

Rich..

Tony was probably at Gatow during the Berlin Airlift so things may well have changed since then  All the major car progs on TV in the UK spent a lot of time covering buying cars abroad when it was found that you could by what was intrinsically a brand new UK export on the continent for a lot less than it could be bought here. However, they didn't.. to the best of my knowledge.. cover used cars to which yours applies. I reckon the best thing to do would be to contact them direct rather than risk a shock in the UK ;-) At least VAT is lower now than it was 5 years ago so now would be as good a time as any to bring it back :)

Were you a member of HM Forces serving in germany when you bought it? If so, my understanding has been that if you used it abroad for a minimum of 6 months whilst a serving member, you could subsequently import it free of VAT/duty
