Zone Alarm and FS9

I've recently been having problems with FS9 slowing, stuttering and pausing. This led to me doing a clean install of FS9, but the problem persisted.
Wracking my brains, I thought through any recent installs on my PC and remembered that there had been a major update for Zone Alarm (I use the free version). This had defaulted the updates for Zone Alarm from 'Manual' to 'Automatic'. On re-setting the updates to 'Manual', the problems have disappeared.
The problem seems not to effect FSX (though I rarely use it).
