Odd behaviour of FS9

Post by hobby »

Problem 1

On a couple of occasions recently when I have selected FS9 from the shortcut on my desktop a message has appeared thus:

"Not enough memory to run Flight Simulator" shortly afterwards the program disappears.

Problem 2:

Looking at my file structure I found with the category 'Documents/User' a file labelled 'Most recent documents' This seemed to be full of all sorts of files and zips together with numerous shortcuts to the panel and acft cfgs that I have been modifying recently. Please note that after I have modified an acft or pnl cfg I religiously delete all the previous versions of panels and acft cfgs that I have been working on. I cannot understand why these 'shortcuts' to deleted files remain in this 'most recent files' section.

Can I safely delete the whole of the contents of 'most recently used files'?

Problem 3:

One used to be able to adjust the 'let windows manage virtual memory' by entering certain numbers and thus stopping the Windows system virtual memory 'ballooning' and using all the available computing capacity, sometimes beyond the computer capacity to process all the available data - that resulted sometimes in hesitation and sometimes in a CTD.

I cannot remember how to adjust the virtual memory limits. Perhaps that is no longer possible with XP, FS9.

Would forum members care to offer advice or comment?

Hi Mate, can't comment on no.1 sounds like something specific to your PC.

No.2 is just the recent files list. When you access something, windows makes a note of it so that it can access it again more quickly if needs be. If you have deleted the items its refering to, its no problem as its just a pointer so no need to go cleaning it up, windows will deal with it in time as you access more files, these ones will fall out the bottom as it where.

No.3 Leave windows memory management alone unless your running low on disk space. You can manually configure it, but its not necessary under normal operation.

Ben's answered the others already... as to number one, just close down as much as you can of what's running, and refresh the desktop. It'll start up.

Hi Hobby. I was also periodically suffering from the memory message when trying to run FS9 with 2Gb of RAM. It was usually because the HDD was busy and if I left it for a bit it would be OK. However, I did read somewhere that increasing the page file allocation would cure it, so I gave it a try. Deleting the config file helped, but increasing the page file cured it completely and there appears to be no side effects. I'm running Vista but I expect the path to it is similar in XP. Here's a screenie to illustrate the Vista path (Computer/system properties etc etc) and it shows that I've increased the page file size on my FS (D) drive to 3067-4067 Mb while the C drive is managed by Windows. (They are not discrete drives but partitions btw).

For 'widows' please read 'Windows!!!!!'

Most amusing error - an awful lot of my very much alive wife's friends are widows!! I have no wish to be involved with any widow at present.

Then you'd be too drunk to care what your experience index was, Jim
