Looking for a decent Low-profile Graphic Card ...

Post by DanKH »

Hi,

I came into posession of a decent SFF (Small Form Factor) Dual Core HP-machine, but only equipped with the default graphic card, which is very useful for Word, outlook etc. ... but not quite capable of Flight Simulator ;-)

So I'm now out to hunt a good low-profile (because of the tiny case) card to a resonable price ;-)

Any hints?

Hi Dan. We are using an NVidia Quadro of some sort in the ones in work. I'll try and find out the model number. From memory its ony about £100.

Does this help?

Notice the comment about the PSU possibly being a limiting factor.

And I think the Quadro FX3700 is somewhat more expensive than the one Ben referred to.

The ones we have been using in work are NVS 290 - PCI Express, 256MB DDR2. No problems with power and driving 2 monitors (thats why we use them) Not sure about cost or performance for FS though. :)

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia_Quadro the NVS290 is based on the G86 chip.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_8_Series the G86 chip is used in the 8300/8400/8500 which are not games cards.

Anything like this in Denmark? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GeForce-9600GT-51 ... 1|240:1318

Although it might blow up your PSU

Last one looks fine ;-)

A more powerful PSU isn't that expensive, should it be needed.

True Dan... but it won't fit. The SSF chasis uses a custom PSU, its a non standard shape ;-)

Ben

Agreed.

Probably why someone in an earlier link that I posted suggested that it was probably easier to put the whole lot in a new case and not be restricted by PSU or low profile cards.
