Ok me again and the upgrade, which may never happen but I keeps looking
Your thoughts if you have time appreciated, as you can see I am taking advice and looking at quads... CPU's that is not kiddies I think my brain couldnt cope with little feet again!! :o

Maybe I have my cautious head on, but I wouldn't buy anything like that off ebay mate unless it an ebay shop associated with a reputable online retailer.

Whats wrong with ebuyer / scan etc?

They're all described as CPUs running at 9.6GHz
Now if it's a quad core running at 2.4Ghz that's not 4x2.4 = 9.6
That's a bit like saying my car has got 4 wheels each doing 70mph therefore I'm travelling at 280mph????
Doesn't inspire me with any confidence in the builder's technical knowledge!

Before I bought any hand-built system I'd want to know what PSU was installed (make, model and wattage)
I'd also want to know the brand of memory (and latencies) and the brand of GPU

My advice ..leave well alone

I think I'm in full agreement here. Anyone quoting a quad as 9.6gig has most certainly lost the plot. Keep your money Tony or better still.. send it to me. I have a C2D E6600 (2.4gig) which means its really a 4.8gig and you can have it for less than the 9.6Q6600

That method of quoting the speed of CPUs is quite common on eBay - seems to be a competition to impress the punters. But if you ignore the hype (I don't believe it is seller's ignorance), work out the cost of the components, and see how much they are charging to put it all together.

Bear in mind that two of those systems have Asrock motherboards which are usually fairly basic.

Is it worth it? My initial impression (without doing the sums) is that those prices are on the high side.

And despite the negative comments about eBay traders, I did buy two assembled PCs from there. I carefully weighed up the feedback comments, worked out that I could not buy the bits cheaper, and went for it. BUT I bought from auction not Buy-it-now and hence paid considerably less. And 18 months later, they are not recognisable as the systems I bought since the bits have been upgraded and the original bits are now in a server or two. So as a confirmed fiddler with PCs, it suited me.

If you want a system that just works without imminent upgrades, take Ben's advice.

The specification of the first option is good for the price - a quick trawl through overclockers.co.uk show it would be difficult to put together similar components for the same price.

With respect to warnings of buying over ebay - if bought with a credit card then you would be protected against fraud.

Thanks Chris, I thought number 1 sounded the best but as always this is a great place to come for ideas...I know that the 4 clocks do not add together I reslise thats a poor ad but I wondered if the quad 6600 would be as fast as a dual e8600 as that runs at 3ghz per core... would the q6600 easily overclock to this level?

Thepoint about Ebay is not fraud, its that you don't actually know what the bits are... and if one bit breaks 6 months down the line, what are you going to do, take it back?

Buy from a reputable online retailer.

And on the overclocking stuff.... why. Why not buy something thats going to do the business as designed? And with the greatest respect, and I really do mean this without offence, your track record with PC's over the past few years hasn't been great, so why buy something your going to have to fiddle with (overclock)
Personally, I've never felt the urge (for that anyway), and given your luck, you'll blow the damn thing up!

No I agree I bought from Mesh... :fart: and have upgraded memory hard drives, video cards, fixed the motherboard fan myself as Mesh wanted a fortune under warranty to do it...
So I was looking for a PC that will run better than what I have without piddling about with it. Now I have conceded that Intel are the best ones to go for having taken advice here and looking at the net etc, but its which one... now that company on eBay are also doing the Q6550 quad systems with some healthy specs.
I will consider if its worth my time building or buying, or maybe just wait in the wings a bit longer..
