Air Day at RNAS Yeovilton

Post by mayagrafix »

Air Day starts at 0900 BST on 5 July at RNAS Yeovilton. There will be a Fairey Swordfish flying for the first time in 9 years. Also a B52 Sratofortress will be on hand (All you Dr. Strangelove fans will feel right at home since the movie was filmed in England's Shepperton Studio). They are quite impressive, especially on T/O.

Stingbag made it's first post-restoration flight around lunch time today, although I was sure they had more than one South side. Not sure if the Buff is landing as I didn't think the runway was that big!!
On the down side I'm not sure the next couple of days bad weather will have cleared through by Saturday :-(

Can't believe that its nine Years since the Stringbag flew, I remember seeing one as an Air cadet, and Im sure that can't have been more than 6 or 7 years ago at R.A.F Cosford. Then again it could have been, getting further and further away now, have been a staff member there for the best part of two years!

I am agonising over this. Recently started a new job, so the longer visit to Dorset is out until later in the year, so no Fairford for me - but If I am sharp on Friday, there's an easy to Bristol arriving at 2230, and my digs are near Gillingham, so it's a 20 mile drive, with a decent start time for the show.

I'm keen to see some of the ex - carrier stuff in the air :)

Tantalising Peter...

The forecast, according to the Met office, is grim however - heavy showers and a wind gusting to 43mph.....

Peter..

A word of caution should you venture south. GO EARLY (ok.. that's two words) When I went last year.. I was staying in Cornwall about 16miles away and it took me 3hrs to get in :'( Equally.. getting out is a major pain unless you're lucky where you park. I saw little evidence of the Chief Constable's assurance that many more Police Officers had been drafted in to help keep things moving.. unless of course there are only half a dozen Police Officers on the Devon and Cornwall force!!

If you've ever done RIAT.. Yeovilton ranks a very close second as far as vehicle congestion is concerned ;-)

Dave
I think you arer getting Yeovilton & Culdrose mixed up.
Culdrose is usually a pain due to the roads and unfortunately not a lot the Constabulary could have done to keep things moving as the Navy had moved the show to the first week of the school holidays. I spent 2 hours looking at the roundabout at the top of Helston. :-(

I'm told Yeovilton is a vast improvement owing to the proximity to the 303 and other main routes with the added advantage of several car parking areas dedicated to each route in. I'll find out on Saturday :flying:
