Nevermind i have a soft spot for this plane it looks quite purposeful and has a good service record until just lately, anyway...its not as ugly as this this...anyone guess what it is? Another cancelled project (thank god)....

The nimrod AEW was an excellent design, however the 707 AEW already existed, so to produce the nim AEW would hsve required billions of more pounds. Its a difficult balance between something that should be a world beater an justifing spending billions to make it so when something which fits the bill already exists.
I remember thinking of AEW as the great white hope when I were a lad, ugly or not, it had much promise. :-(

Wasn't overheating of the equipement in the small narrow cabin a major issue with the AEW???

Plus the same smallness limiting developement?

It is a shame it didn't progress but they had to get an AEW and cut cost as well.

Might have been better to have used VC 10's insted of Nimrods :think:

They had the BA fleet and could have left the Nimrods alone instead or wasting those frames :-(

I would have though the same rig used on the Grumman E-2 would have easily fit on a nimrod airframe. I know it had been installed in P-3 airframes

I think the reason for the Nim airframe was its "loiter" capability was already well defined, and the capability of an a/c to get to the incident zone and stay airborne for long periods was something the VC10 couldn't manage. I seem to remember cooling was one of the stated issues, but truth be told the Marconi Radar needed much more developement to compete. In short the existing airframe was more than capable, but the electronics needed much more developement, and that is where much of the cost lay.

Wasn't the 3's radar too darned sensitive (unlikely as that may seem)?? Target recognition was near to impossible as anything with a vague metal content was being displayed :think: Dunno.. it's been a while now
