At the risk of getting a virtual slap in the chops - switch it on in your BIOS.
Usually under "Integrated Peripherals" or similar.
Shouldn't be an issue, but if using Vista - don't forget to set it up in the control panel. Right-click your speaker icon in the taskbar and select "Playback Devices" and take it from there.
Deffo last: If you have a PCI audio card in addition to the onboard sound, they sometimes don't like working together and can give you a BSOD. If that's the case.... oh dear (Padré and TS chit....)
Now you're gonna tell me you know all that and it has nowt to do with your chip not working..... :brick:

Okay - I just downloaded the manual and see that it is indeed switched on in the BIOS, under Integrated Peripherals. The manual is pretty much saying that if you have a PCIe audio card, you can forget about your onboard sound.
It also seems to say that there is a default 'Auto' setting. Might be worth going in there to see if there is also an 'enabled' setting, so that you take the decision out of the BIOS' hands.
Azalia Codec is the switch title.
I take it you've read and applied the manual stuff and are still having problems?
In the bios there are two options.. AUTO and disabled. If you disable the onboard sound.. you really WILL get no sound so AUTO is the only way to go. I've dug out a set of 2.1 speakers and plugged it into the 'Line Out' and finally got sound. The rear panel was active throughout and knew if I'd plugged (or unplugged) a speaker. However.. I still have a question mark in UNKOWN DEVICES showing HD Sound Bus which won't F off. This says there are no drivers loaded. When I use the mobo disc which searches the system to see what is and isn't loaded.. it reports 'Drivers Installed'
Ben has found an interesting snippet somewhere which says the speakers should be plugged in before installing the drivers. This I didn't do (WTF would you really ) but it may be the reason for the failure up to now. He's also found a-n-other driver for me to try which I might go for in the fullness of time ;-) In the meantime.. I'm happy to be hearing more than the POST beep
BTW.. the current drivers are for and up to and inc WinXP SP2/Vista and I unwittingly installed SP3 onto a virgin install of XP SP2. Can't be sure if this is an issue but I now have sound and am happy ;-)
