Advice on Anti-Virus Programmes

Post by Nigel H-J »

Have decided that I am going to ditch this freeware lark with anti virus products after installing AVG 8.1.

Would be grateful if any-one to recommend a good one as long as it is not Nortons or Mcafee!!

Have been thinking about Kaspersky.

Many thanks in advance.

Regards
Nigel.

Kaspersky gets great reviews and I've been running Trend for 4 years now which consistantly comes top in Gartners white papers on anti virus.

Most of them do a free trial for a month, so better to do that before you put your hand in your pocket. You'll want one that you find easy to use, so shortlist 3, run each one for a month and then pick one to buy. :)

Many thanks Ben, though have to say that (my ignorance is now coming out) I have not heard of Trend before. Is this a product aimed at commercial businessess more than private use?

Trend Micro is as old as the hills. They have both corporate and home use products (as do all of the big guys these days)

The free trail is here....
Trend
http://uk.trendmicro.com/uk/downloads/h ... omeoffice/
Kaspersky
http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/trials

P.S. remember to uninstall your current Anti Virus and reboot before installing a new one

Also look at the number of PC's that are covered by the one license. I know trend and most of the other ones will allow you to install on 3 PC's now for one license fee.

Many thanks Ben, most helpful.

Have been looking at the Trend site and this, if I choose to go with the product, would be the one?

Trend Micro™ AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware 2008

Many thanks again, will download the trial offers as nothing to lose and more to gain. By the way it says No Auto Renew. Excuse my ignorance but surely it must come with an annual license payment?

Regards Nigel.

Try both Nigel!!!!

Most (if not all) work on an anual license, hence the no auto renew. The last time I renewed I got the new version and 2 years of updates for £30... and also have it installed on 3 PC's... £5 per PC per year... not bad.

That was a few years ago now though.

Many thanks Ben, will do the trial runs tomorrow as going on duty soon so don't have much time left to download and install.

Nigel

Have you considered Steganos at http://www.steganos.com ?

It uses Kapersky AV and also includes antispyware, anti-spam, firewall, shredder, e-mail scanner, etc. It is currently being offered on the above site at USD39.95.

I have been using it for about 3 years and cannot fault it. All that grief from Nort@!* ton and McCa@@*&&fee is a thing of the past.

Hi Ralph,

Not sure I follow it. Kaspersky (and Trend) offer these functions in their own product. Is this a re badged Kaspersky?

Hi Ralph

Many thanks for the link but think I will stick with the two Ben has suggested, one reason being is price, all I basically need is an aniti-virus and if it comes with anti-spyware as well then to me, that is an additional bonus. To be honest, I don't really want to pay an awful lot unless absolutely necessary, the maximum amount would be around £30 that I would be willing to pay for an anti-virus programme.

Again, very many thanks for your suggestion and for the link.

Regards
Nigel.
