FSX Problem

Post by RobDob »

Evening Gents.
I seem to have a problem with FSX. After running for about 30 minutes the whole PC shuts down, as in it drops dead completely with no warning at all. One second you're flogging along the next the whole system has shut down. Very frustrating. Dos anyone have any suggestions please?
I'm a core-2 due 6700 (2.66GHz), 2 gig of RAM, NVidia 6800GT 640Mb. FSX SP2 & Acceleration installed. Is any other info needed?
Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Rob

I'd put money on overheating mate, probably the CPU.

Or power supply has had enough after 30 minutes.

The CPU is supposed to throttle down if it gets too hot.

What's the powers supply model/make and claimed output?

I'd tend to go with Ian (for what it's worth which is probably nothing) in that Windows will come up with a BLACK (not blue) screen of death very quickly saying it is closing down to save itself (words to that effect) if the CPU is going under. If it's not a 'windows used' component (eg.. PSU) the warning wouldn't happen and it would just stop.. my experience, based on what I've seen.. not what may happen in real life

Either of these programs will tell you your CPU core temps while Windows (and FSX) is running. Useful to see how close to the limit they are getting and then you can either deal with it (reseat heatsink) or know it is something else.

And this one shows temps and other info:

Yeah....check your PSU wattage....if under 600W - beef it up to what you can afford....

I had to upgrade to a 900W but now i am thinking of liquid cooled.....

With that rig a 600W or even 500W is fine, especially if it's a decent quality branded make like Enermax. If it's an el-cheapo one then yes, 900W might be required, but then I'd still feel far safer with a lower rated brand named PSU than a cheap and cheerful high wattage. Of course if you can afford a high wattage branded one then it's win win, but they are very expensive.

I've seen far too many cheap PSU's blow and take the rest of the system with them when they do to ever be comfortable using then.

Incidentally unless you require a completely silent system and are going to cool everything in a closed loop or are a major overclocker there isn't much need to watercool, it'll probably be overkill. I remember experimenting with everything from watercooling through to bong cooling and phase change cooling and even ducting to the outside and such other bizarre things back in the day, but these days you get such great overclocks from aircoolers there really isn't that much point.

Robdob, install a program like Speedfan (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php) or Motherboard Monitor (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=311) and give us all of the temperatures that are displayed, that way we'll be able to rule out or confirm an overheating CPU or GPU for you and these will also display your voltages so we can tell you if your PSU is being put under undue strain.

Here's running an overclocked 9800GTX and Core2 Quad Q9450 running at 3.2ghz (Ain't tried any higher. On stock voltage too!) on a 480w PSU with 100% stability :)
It is a Tagan though, I bet I a cheapo 480w jobbie would blow up
