Fs9 Odd Textures...for me too
Hello,
As most of you by now have realised, I am now in receipt of a new PC (Intel Dual Core P6600 running at 3.3gig with 2gig RAM and a 8800GT graphics card). I've had it for two weeks now and am pleased, but am having a spot of bother with FS9.
My odd texture problem seems to relate to scenery. I'm using the VFR photographic, with VFR Terrain, UK2000 Airports and local autogen (trees etc). At first everything was fine, but for the last couple of days, I've been having big big problems.
For example, the other night I flew from Yeovilton in Rick Piper's Foxbat to Exeter via Dunkeswell. Upon leaving Yeovilton, the airfield buildings and runway lost all textures and looked more like a watercolour than what was intended. Everything looked blurred and out of focus....buildings, runway markings etc. Photographic scenery was just void of any detail and was just basic colours. Upon taking off and leaving the vicinity of the airfield everything became normal again and no problems at all were encountered until I reached Dunkeswell. Flying low over the runway to check my homemade AI (a Chipmunk was present), the same thing happened again and back it went to nothing. Leaving the airfield it reverted to the real thing again. Same thing happened at Exeter, but only after landing.
I tried it again tonight this time departing from St Mawgan and lo and behold yet again. Everything washes out and then after flying away, reverts back to normal again.
For the first ten days or so everything was fine. I cant fathom out what is causing the problem and the only thing I have done recently is add my AI. I have deleted the cfg file and created a new one, but its the same story. What am I doing wrong?
I would really appreciate any comments as I havent a clue and I upgraded the PC just for the sim and at the moment its totally unusable. I have other 'software' such as DIRT, Crysis, CoD 2 and 4, Fuel of War etc and these are fine, its just the sim.
Best wishes,
Martin

Daft question Martin, but have you tried rebuilding the cfg file since installing the addons? I know it "shouldn't" make much difference, but it might, and is a good first step. Rename the fs9.cfg to fs9.cfg.old start the sim, and a new one will be created with default settings. Then adjust your graphics options bit by bit until either a. your happy and it all works, or b. the problem comes back and you can see whats causing it.

Ben.

Re: Fs9 Odd Textures...for me too
Not a daft question at all, I'm the one that usually does that kind of thing. Yep, rebuilt the cfg after everything was installed and it did the same. But since posting my initial message, I've read the original subject thread and all of things and I'm not sure if this was the right thing, but I did have AI versions of Dave's Hunters, flying from Exeter and St Mawgan. In fact one was about to depart tonight when things went all silly. So I deleted it from the traffic file and then had a little look in my scenery library to see if there was anything new added. Only things I could relate to added in the last couple of days were the Ukmil airfields of Coningsby and Leuchars (both wonderful pieces of work). I 'declicked' these just to see and with my Hunterless skies (sob, sob), loaded the sim from scratch and took the Foxbat up again from St. Mawgan and (touch wood) everything SEEMS to be ok. This may not of course be the problem, but its ok at the mo.XR219 wrote:Daft question Martin, but have you tried rebuilding the cfg file since installing the addons? Going flying tomorrow (hopefully) so wont be able to test again until tomorrow night.
Thanks and best wishes to all,
Martin

Hi Martin,
As Peter indicated in the other thread, Dave's Hunters will kill most folks scenery off in short order (mine included) and the only way around the problem I know of is to convert the textures to DXT3. If you still see the problem, try converting them to DXT3 with mips and that should cure the problem. I can't think of any other aircraft that will so readily convert the ground to a sea of opaque hues.

Strange one, in that I've never had a problem with the hunter, even when I had FS9. I had a 4 ship from Germany that would fly to Cyprus, and they never caused a problem. Here's an old pic from a few years back...

Yes mate.. it doesn't seem to effect everyone but I think the bottom line here might be that you need a very fast machine in order to avoid it and I know that your old FS9 machine was no slouch
Obviously, speed and altitude are also prime factors with the Hunter but for me.. I've seen the VC go to blur on landing with no other AI in sight. The model, for whatever reason will find any 'performance hole' and exploit it to the full

I must say I've not noticed any background blurries with the Superfreighter
Plenty of time to draw
I seem to recall it was Hunter problem with the slower machines so it is no surprise that Ben didn't experience them.

Re: Fs9 Odd Textures...for me too
There are separate problems with flying over Photo Scenery and you should change the odd settings. I don't use any UK Photo but I do use Alaska Cinematic...Richard Goldstein recommends the following:-
1. Options > Settings > Display...UNTICK Extended Terrain Textures.
2. Let your Frame Rates go unrestricted.
3. He also recommends for lesser powered machines in real weather to select "Simple Clouds".
I leave my frame rates unrestricted all the time these days but whenever I go to the Alaska Cinematic area I do number 1. above.
Another good tip from Richard with regard to flying over this sort of scenery is to set up a Key attribution to "Refresh Scenery"...I use the key R. Then if you get a taste of blurries due to aircraft speed, just tap R...It refreshes very quickly if you have done 1. above and very slowly if you haven't

Hi Peter..
They are also the recommended settings for UKVFRPhoto as published by them (not sure if this applies to GenX and FSX) but the Hunter still kills my ground in non-DXT3 paints ;-)
