Browsing with Google Earth, I took a closer look at North Luffenham and got a surprise.
Can anyone shed some light on the state of the runways?
PS A very happy Christmas to one and all

Runways being used as a bombing target? I saw what looks like a hunter, phantom and harrier on the ground, the harrier might be usable but from 100+ miles up its hard to tell.
Joe Cusick,

I doubt its being used as a bombing target with a golf course now taking up much of the airfield. :o
Interesting though. Could be various excivations to check out the makeup of the runway for demolition? I thought I spotted a couple of JP's as well.
Here it is on local.live.com

Re: google earth-airfields
They look very much like 'fake' craters to me - look at the piles of hardcore lying, and 'craters' nearby looking suspiciously similar in colour. Possibly for aerial recce or other training? Absolutely no way it would be live bombing that close to the A1!!!! :flying:
Curiously, you can see the airfield in a more up to date state (The runway is now cropped over) - in Google maps - satellite view - but NOT if you have Google earth installed!!

Explanation found at 'AIRSCENE'
"but the RAF still continue to have a detachment, the Airfield Explosive Ordnance Disposal Training Flight (AEOD), out on the airfield near what was once Midland Radar."
Mystery over.
