New Instructions to ATC...

Post by petermcleland »

Here at McLeland Field the ILS approach to runway 13 has always been rated as dangerous, but with the advent of Glacier Bay version 2, the terrain got rather more knobbly! Now it is a bit near the knuckle, so to speak!
So, today I issued some new instructions to ATC to make them give a final vector onto the ILS for 13 with a descent clearance to 5000 feet, instead of the previous 4500 feet. The Glideslope is still the same at 4.5 degrees. I flew some test approaches in Little Bandit and they worked out very nicely...I have yet to checkout the AI Traffic with the new instructions. Here are a few shots that I took today, in real weather, during the radar vectoring and the final approach and landing:-

Here I have been vectored down the Russell Fjord and these first few shots are of the narrow gap at the Hubbard Glacier.

Nicely settled onto the ILS now and the high ground to the left clearly shows why this approach is rated as dangerous.

Thanks for looking 8)

No Trev,

The one you have is GBv2...v1 was years ago and McLeland Field was not compatible. I built my approaches for the FS9 default mesh and Holger's mesh does make things stick up a bit more...hence the mods to the XML code :)

I never really had any trouble on 13 but I always like a change :)

You won't notice much Jonesey but you will remember that when ATC cleared you to 4500 feet in the past, if you were a bit quick getting down there then it could get a bit frightening. Now you will only be going down to 5000 feet and it shouldn't matter too much if you get there a bit early. The AI Traffic seem to be rather good at arriving at their cleared altitude at the same moment they hit the localiser and glideslope all together...Sadly though, some of them are then content to drop quite a bit below the slope...some even clip through the top few feet of a hill. I'm hoping this extra 500 feet at join will keep those oddball few above the surface

Jonesey...I'll try to get the update to you today, for a bit of testing...Nothing to do but fly a few approaches on runway 13 and watch some traffic landing that way 8)

Jim, I'll copy it to you as well for testing :)
