Virtual Memory Question.

Post by Nigel H-J »

Recently I had a look my Control/System/Virtual Memory Page and found that for the C drive the settings were selected to Custom Size, the allocation being:

Initial Size (MB) = 768

Maximum Size (MB) = 1536

Not being a computer genius I still thought that figure given was low so set it to 'system manage size' I am running Windows XP.

As I have 2Gb RAM is it best to allow the computer to decide on how much to use or would some-one here be kind enough to suggest the best settings i.e. initial size + maximum size (MB).

Also do any changes effect performance i.e. increase the performance noticeably? :dunno:

There used to be a school of thought that said you should hard code the pagefile size to 2.5 x the amount of system ram. Theory being that the size of the file remained fixed and therefore the system didn't have to use resources to change the size of the file. To do this, you set max and min to be the same size... 2.5x your system memory.

i don't know if it makes much difference nowadays though. :dunno:
